33 Ways You Know You Were A Youth Group Kid
Hey, can I borrow your Jars of Clay CD to bring to the lock-in?
1. You were so excited that your crush was also going to the lock-in.
2. You know ALL the hand motions to “Lord I Lift Your Name On High.”
3. You had one of these. (Extra point if you had your name embossed on the cover in gold.)
4. You at one point decided to kiss dating good-bye.
6. This was the greatest album you’d ever heard.
9. You burned all of your secular CDs at a church bonfire but then “backslid” and bought new copies of everything.
10. You used curse word substitutes like “son of a biscuit,” “frickin’,” “what the fudge,” and “dad gum it.”
13. Every Wednesday night you were at Fuel, The Edge, Fire, Reverb, The Blaze, Kindle, or Echo.
15. You went on a mission trip to Mexico, Guatemala, Haiti, Ghana, Nicaragua, Uganda, or Venezuela.
20. You prayed at school during “See You at the Pole.”
22. You knew the best Sunday school kids had Bibles that looked like this.
23. You were encouraged to “share your testimony” with your classmates.
24. You went to TGI Friday’s after youth group with a party of 14, and everyone ordered water.
25. You knew the most important question in the world was “How far is too far?”
26. You had that one girl who would always cry and be dramatic when praying out loud. (Or you WERE that girl.)
28. Instead of Halloween, you went to your church’s “Harvest Festival.”
29. All the concerts you went to gave you the opportunity to sponsor a kid.
30. You “guarded your heart” or knew someone who guarded their heart.
32. Your parents would only let you listen to TruthFM, WayFM, The BridgeFM, HopeFM, LightFM, ShineFM, or PraiseFM. (Safe for the whole family!)

catherinocalypse 4 months agoBasically all of these hold true for me as I was indoctrinated in a Southern Baptist Church as a kid; I’m atheist, anti-theist now. I wonder if anyone else here got subjected to something called “bible drill.”

hanapana 4 months agoI was a Preacher’s daughter during my childhood so you can imagine the many youth groups I attended. I’m not an atheist (though in my 20s I thought I was). I’m not gay. (Though in my 20s I thought I might be bi.) And I’m not scarred for life from religion.
Some of these commenters are straight up bigots against religion. It’s fine to share your experiences but don’t rip on people who have religion in their lives. It makes you seem immature and prejudiced. -

deans4 3 months agoericcv, you really don’t know much about faith. The definition you gave is not what the Bible says Faith is. Other religions might beleive what you give as a definition, but not Christianity. In Christianity, faith can be measured, it can be seen. It has results. Does someone really have faith? If so, there will be solid and obvious results. I think you and I may be a lot closer than we’d think on this. Are you saying that there is no proof to Faith? If so, I would agree to the point that if there is no proof, there is no Faith. Faith is a real quality, it is a type of measuring stick. There are also different types of faith: saving faith, faith to get healed, faith to get others healed.

a TON of these do not apply to all sects of Christianity. I was definitely a youth group kid but no one at my church would EVER try to tell us what kind of music to listen to or when to make the personal choice to have sex. It’s offensive to imply that all Christians think this way.

Having grown up Mormon, I can relate to 9,10, 22-27 but the rest were what Nonmormons did. But I still bought those albums and tossed out my rock tapes (and yes, bought them over again - as CDs!) and I was secretly intrigued by protestant youth stuff.
Can’t forget “seminary” in high school with my scriptures and red pencil. I could never go back to the church, but this does make me a little nostalgic. -

Some of this is familiar enough to catch me. Apparently dad went out with each of my sisters, gave them purity rings and…well, I actually don’t know much more. I guess he was supposed to do the same with my twin brother and I, but it seems he may have forgotten to. As far as the list goes, the knock-off T-shirts, WWJD bracelets seemed tacky even to 12-year-old me. Other stuff here seems denominationally-specific but familiar. I don’t know about the swearing… where I’m from if you wanted to swear you’d swear, and if you didn’t swear then you probably kept enough of your frustration inside that you didn’t need to self-censor.

It’s a false Christianity.
True Christianity has more to do with holiness, with walking in the reality of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, but our churches are lead by false shepherds who are, on the whole, educated stupid people when it comes to the realities. Shepherds for hire.

Need to include SKILLET and RED into that mix of music! Can’t seem to find a good youth group for my kids where we are now, but the one we left when we moved had nothing but a positive influence on them. In fact we have plans to hit a few concerts in the next couple months where we might even sponser a child ;) Don’t knock it :) My youth group as a teen was horrific, but there are great ones out there!
