The World's Most Isolated Art Installation Will Take Your Breath Away

Antony Gormley will give you a reason to visit this empty lake.

Usually you'd assume there'd be nothing to see in a dried up salt lake in the middle of Outback Australia. But Antony Gormley is proving you wrong.

The British artist's installation comprises 51 sculptures of people, which are alien figures against the barren landscape.

Located 55km away from the town of Menzies (population 56), and over 700km from Perth, the statues may possibly be the most isolated art installation in the world.

The sculptures, formed from metal found in Western Australia, are made from laser scans of local residents which were then mapped into 3D.

Though they are life-size in their height, they were reduced horizontally by two-thirds. Gormley says: "There is something in the way that people stood while being scanned that is transferred in this process of concentration."

The figures by the internationally renown artist were commissioned in 2003 in celebration of the 50th anniversary for the Perth International Arts Festival.

They were supposed to be removed at the end of the festival, but have remained as a tourist attraction.

The landscape of Lake Ballard itself is mesmerising, and the sculptures take the natural beauty to a whole new level.

The best time to visit is late afternoon or early morning, when the statues cast beautiful shadows over the white sand.

The sculptures are placed on an area of about 10 square km on the lake.

Says Gormley: "I wanted to try to find the human equivalent for this geological place. I think human memory is part of place, and place a dimension of memory."
