5 Reasons Why New Year's Eve Is Terrible

Raise your hand if you've ever felt personally victimized by New Year's Eve.

New Year's Eve is widely lauded as one of the biggest and best celebrations of the year. Hundreds of people line up to stand around in a wintry December night to watch a ball drop, and to watch hosts desperately attempt to entertain the crowd between musical performances. And what are the rest of us doing? Either getting wasted at a party, or sitting at home watching, wait for it, a ball drop.

All teasing aside (but not really) New Year's Eve can be a really miserable celebration for people. I for one have never really enjoyed New Year's Eve. Now I'm not trying to stomp all over this special day, but I just think there are tons of reasons why it sucks.

It Makes You Insane in the Membrane

One of the biggest components of New Year's Eve is recounting an entire year's worth of successes and failures. You relive the awkward, the complicated, the heartwarming, the heartbreaks, and everything in between. It's all too much to process in one day, and it just doesn't seem healthy. We all say the year flies by, but seriously, a year encompasses an immeasurable amount of emotion and thought.

We break ourselves down, more often than build ourselves up, by thinking of all the ways that we didn't make the most of the year. There's this high standard that we set for ourselves that ultimately leads into self-disappointment when we reflect at the year's end. It's just all-around depressing.

(If you're one of those people that's happy when they reflect on the past year, than I'm sincerely happy for you!)

Buckle Up For The Anxiety

After you're done reflecting on the year, you're then forced to deal with the onslaught of questions regarding your plans for next year. What will you do differently? What will you do the same? Then you can't help but start wondering if the new year will be better or worse than the previous one. Most of the time these thoughts just lead to stomach-knotting anxiety and worry, both of which are terrible.

Beware. Drunks Are Coming

If you're not a drinker then New Year's Eve can be pretty uncomfortable. Prepare to hear your relatives and friends talk about things that probably shouldn't be talked about, fall everywhere, and if you're (un)lucky, cry. Moderation is not the name of the game on New Year's Eve.

Like most holidays, we've turned it into a total binge drinking jamboree. Do your best to steer clear of the vomit and emotional outbursts that will come. And if you choose to drink, just be safe, and encourage your friends to do the same!

Resolutions... You All Saw It Coming

Resolutions are the extra special gift that comes with an already sub-par "holiday". They come in all shapes and sizes. Some resolutions focus on the physical--weight loss, getting toned, building more muscle, etc. Other resolutions focus on specific goals, like snagging a coveted job, writing that story you've always wanted to write, or joining a team of some sort. We put our hopes and dreams for the New Year into these declarations.

While they seem fun and positive, they often lead to more disappointment than happiness. We feel like we have something to prove, not only to ourselves, but also to anyone who happened to hear our resolution. I think as a society we've all accepted that resolutions rarely come to fruition in the time-span that we'd like... so why do we continue to make them?

... No, really. I want to know.

The Loneliness

New Year's Even is a romantic holiday. After the ball drops at midnight, everyone looks to their partner and kisses them to open the New Year. Well, when you don't have that person for that moment it can be pretty draining.

This is true of most holidays, but for New Year's Eve it can hit especially hard. The moment after the ball drops you are supposed to find that special someone and share the moment with them. I'm not saying you can't have this moment with your family or with your friends, but it's hard not to crave that romantic moment of getting to start a scary, New Year with a non-platonic someone.

You ultimately get stuck looking at all the couples. Then once they're done you move in for your own hugs so that you aren't the awkward person standing alone. The real hurt comes when you realize that you weren't anyone's first choice.
