      Re: #28: When James Murray Spangler (of Canton, OH) invented the world’s first practical use portable vacuum cleaner, it was called a “suction sweeper” because it was used to sweep the room, but with suction. It was manufactured by Hoover (originally called the “Electric Suction Sweeper Company.”) Which is why many Ohians (even those who don’t why) use “sweeper” for short. Even the terms “vacuum” and “vacuuming” were likely at first a shortening of the term “vacuum sweeper” rather than the currently more popular term “vacuum cleaner”.
