A Swarm Of Locusts Has Descended Upon Madagascar And It's The Worst Thing Ever

Apocalyptic photos show billions of insects darkening the skies of the capital city of Antananarivo. Also: See a locust do the ice bucket challenge.

That grey cloud coming over a hill in Madagascar?

    That's not a cloud. That's a billion swarming locusts.

Madagascar has suffered from a seasonal plague of locusts every year since 2012.

An initiative by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to control the locust population with bio pesticides has suffered from underfunding, and therefore failed to prevent the return of the swarm.

The FAO warns that the current plague "threatens the livelihoods of 13 million people in Madagascar".

Farmers have had to resort to spraying their crops with insecticides and setting fires in order to ward off the swarms.
