I’m saying they could be factors in declining demand and the original implication that weak demand is due to the declining economy is unfounded. The economy started to turn around in 2011, but demand continued to decline. How is that explained?

If anyone’s playing politics with statistics, it’s you by inferring a connection between weak demand and economic downturn that isn’t supported by the link you provide. Weak demand isn’t necessarily due to economic downturn. Lower US demand for oil could also be due to the popularity for more fuel-efficient cars, expansion of public transportation, more employers allowing remote work days, etc.
