Alice Eve Said Bruce Jenner Won’t Be A Woman Until He “Has A Vagina” And "Equal Rights"

    On Friday night, Bruce Jenner's long-anticipated interview with Diane Sawyer – in which he* came out as transgender – finally aired.

    Speaking honestly about his struggle with gender identity, Jenner said: "For all intensive [sic] purposes, I am a woman."

    (*Since Jenner has not expressed a preference for female pronouns and Jenner’s publicist declined to comment on the question, this story uses male pronouns.)

    The interview was watched by 17 million people, and Twitter and Instagram were flooded with support and admiration for the former Olympic champion.

    But then, last night, Star Trek actor Alice Eve took to Instagram to voice her opinions on Jenner's transition, saying that until he has "a vagina" and women have equal rights to men, he is not a woman.

    In comments that have since been deleted, she said: "Nope. If you were a woman no one would have heard of you because women can't compete in the decathlon. You wouldn't be a hero. You would be a frustrated young athlete who wasn't given a chance.

    "Until women are paid the same as men, then playing at being a 'woman' while retaining the benefits of being a man is unfair. Do you have a vagina? Are you paid less than men? Then, my friend, you are a woman."

    She went on to say that she believes equality between men and women should take precedence over transgender equality.

    "I do agree that the struggle for transgenders is unique and horrific," she said. "However, I do want to also support a cause I strongly believe in, the right for women to have equal rights to men. The transgender equality struggle is the next one, as we all know. And very real it is, too."

    She then shared the following two images with much shorter captions, both of which remain on her Instagram page.

    Instagram users were quick to call Eve out on her comments.

    And after reading users' responses, Eve defended her earlier comments and thanked them for "educating" her.

    Alice Eve has since released a statement regarding her comments.

    "I deeply apologize for offending anyone. I support equal rights and equal dignity for all. I have deep compassion and support for Bruce Jenner.

    My intention was not to offend. My intention was simply to express that, with the overdue and welcome acceptance of us all living on a gender spectrum, we must encourage equality for all.
