Before Katy Perry kissed a girl and famously channeled the “vintage retard” look, she was Katy Hudson, a Christian singer who seemed less inspired by Bettie Page and more by Ani Difranco (and Jesus). Just because a failed religious rocker chick grows her hair out, dyes it black, dates the lead singer of Gym Class Heroes (and appears in his video), rattles up an intentionally controversial song, and dresses provocatively doesn’t mean she’s a sell-out. It means she’s desperate.
