Time Magazine’s Provocative New Cover
The print giant adresses the debate over attachment parenting with a bold cover image of a 26-year-old mom breast-feeding her almost 4-year-old son.
Time’s explanation:
The subjects on this week’s TIME cover aren’t models in pose. Jamie Lynne Grumet, photographed by Martin Schoeller with her 3-year-old son, is a mother from Los Angeles who subscribes to attachment parenting, the subject of staff writer Kate Pickert’s cover story. Attachment parenting has been on the rise over the last two decades, since the publication of The Baby Book by Dr. Bill Sears and his wife, Martha, in 1992. Its three main tenets are extended breast-feeding, co-sleeping and “baby wearing,” in which infants are physically attached to their parents by slings.

scarletheels a year agoI wish I had a ‘meh’ reaction. I wouldn’t breastfeed until my kid was four (my kids are now 12 and 14) for selfish reasons. Time’s mission was to initiate buzz and discussion. Mission accomplished.

Inquisitive Kat a year agoI’m not disgusted by public breastfeeding, or even by breastfeeding being shown on a magazine cover… breastfeeding is natural. Breastfeeding a child who is nearly four years old, in a developed nation where the child does not rely on the breast milk for nourishment, is not natural (and you don’t see breastfeeding past infancy in any other species, so why ours?)
I’m waiting to see the long-term results of attachment parenting… I can’t imagine it will be good. -

Cinnamon Broom a year agoHere’s a link to research done by a PhD in Anthropology at Texas A&M University. According to various biological markers, she finds that the “natural” weaning age for humans falls between 2.5 and 7 years. If something looks weird to you, it might be that the norms you grew up with are out if whack. (She looked at factors that predict weaning age in other apes, including the age when apes get permanent molars, quadruple birth weight, age relative to length of gestation, age when a percentage of adult weight is reached http://www.kathydettwyler.org/detwean.html

BlueSerenade a year agoI think the whole, “breast feeding your kid until they’re old enough to move out” thing is a bit weird and I don’t approve of it… For myself. But who am I to say what other mothers should do? Its not my titty and its not my kid. So if a woman wants to breast feed their kid into elementary school, fine by me. It’s weird as all hell but if you think that’s right for your kid, go for it. But I do think it’s interesting from a psychological and child development perspective and should continue to be studied. Just because something is weird and different doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s bad or harmful. Even if it is proven to be harmful, you know there are going to be people who swears their kid is well adjusted so I mean, shit its basically an odd situation all around.

jeskahismoi a year agoMy aunt breast-fed my cousin til she was 9. true story. My cousin is now in her early 20s and is a sweet girl who I guess is “normal.” Being a mom is hard work ( I am one) and who the hell am I to tell another mom how to raise her kid(s)??? Also…I see nothing wrong with this cover…but maybe thats just me.

dak1038 a year agoI’m annoyed that this is a cover story. I’m a mom, and I do not care what other moms do as long as my kid isn’t impacted. Why are we so judgemental? Why do you care how long a woman breastfeeds? Why should I care if you use formula or cloth diapers? Motherhood is hard enough without having to be bothered by what other people think. Whatever works is my mantra. Whatever works for me and my kids - f you and your opinions.

Brian H. a year agoBreastfeeding is great for the kid, I get it, no problem. But the kid is old enough to eat on his own. You start creeping into the perv category when it goes on too long. Also I hope this woman had some inkling of the s**tstorm that she and her family are going to get now.

therblig a year agoi know it’s anecdotal, but blig jr breastfed and never ever had an ear infection, unlike several of his bottle fed cousins. I know he went at least the recommended 6 months and eventually stopped on his own although i can’t remember exactly when. Marlin: How do you know if they’re ready? Crush: Well, you never really know, but when they know, you know, y’know?
