The Justice Department reached a settlement last week regarding approximately 200 students with intellectual and developmental disabilities who were placed in jobs that paid them little to no money, violating both the ADA and the Fair Labor Standards Act. Per the settlement, the State of Rhode Island and the city of Providence agreed to help transition students to better jobs with better pay.

Grant documents for housing accommodation expenses for veterans with disabilities were accidentally deleted by an administrator at the Department of Veterans Affairs last month, along with hundreds of thousands of other electronic documents, the Federal Times reported last week.
UNICEF recently published a report entitled State of the World’s Children 2013: Children With Disabilities. The New England Patriots cut defensive tackle Kyle Love last week after he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes earlier this month. Even though Love doesn’t appear to be taking legal action, the Americans with Disabilities Act protects people with conditions that “substantially limits one or more major life activities”.
This week marks the twentieth anniversary of Joe Shapiro’s book NO PITY: People with Disabilities Forging a New Civil Rights Movement. Shapiro, who has been an investigative correspondent for NPR since 2001, did an interview via email with Disability Frontline.
