Where I'm from it would be considered rude, as it leaves the person/persons who eat slow to sit awkwardly and eat "alone". For us it's one if the first rules, don't remove the plate before everyone is done. It's funny how one thing is considered a good service in one country is bad…

It's only polite if you actually intend to sit down and listen to the awnser and have a conversation. If it's just another way if saying hello, and you don't actually give s... about the other person, then it comes of as rude to most Europeans.

One thing I hate when visiting the States is waiters removing empty plates before the whole table has finished eating. I know you want us to finish quickly so you can have a higher turnover but that is just rude.
