Holocaust Survivor Dances At Concentration Camps

On a recent trip across Europe, a Holocaust survivor and his family visited several concentration camps and danced to Gloria Gaynor’s hit “I Will Survive.”

I know, right? Now tell your friends!

Hey Buzzfeeders! You’re all entitled to your opinions, but I wish you’d start expressing them in ways that were constructive. We have the potential to have some great conversations. But a lot of you think it’s fun to snipe at other users. Saying mean things, however witty, does not make you cool. And sadly, someone who spent a lot of her time trying to help other people on here (Davine) has been chased away.  Think before you post. You never know who you’re hurting. And if you do hurt someone, make an effort to apologize and resolve the situation. Being nice isn’t really that hard, is it?

I think everyone should get the over-riding sentiment: HE is the survivor, and he can do what he damn well wants! I think it was GLORIOUS! I’m so proud of him, and of his grand kids, that they could flout their survival in the very places that were built to eradicate him and all other Jews. BRAVO! May he live another hundred years.

Davine, fuck those pompous asses with their shitty opinions. Buzzfeed is a place for opinions, but most people on here take comments and twist them to fight rather than actually use intelligence to disagree with you. “Oh, you dont like a Holocaust victim video? You MUST be a Nazi.” Sometimes you just gotta tell some Buzzfeeders to suck a huge Sylvester Stallone armdick!

I don’t think anyone who hasn’t survived such an atrocity has a place to say if this is right or wrong. Oftentimes things that are done by people who have faced adversity are lampooned by those who have not been through such an experience.

So long, farewell, I hate to say goodbye…  I’m out of here, Buzzfeed. I communicated some carefully-worded thoughts about how this video made me feel, good and bad (am I entitled to have feelings?), because I thought perhaps my comments about might spark a friendly discussion about whether Disco music was appropriate for the clip. No judgement, just sharing a thought or two that I had.  Almost everything I said was echoed in other posts, yet mine is the one that was labelled “idiotic” and “arrogant”, with implications of bigotry and religious bias. (How ironic that the most intolerant comments I’ve ever received have been on this thread, which should have evoked feelings of compassion and sensitivity, above any other…) This is not the place it once was. I’m done.

I don’t know what to think about this. On the one hand it seems inappropriate, on the other hand, he’s the survivor, not me and I think the idea of dancing at the location that he was sure would be where he died must have felt wonderful. It’s not my place to say what’s wrong or right in this situation, but I guess, maybe I wish they hadn’t put it on youtube, though on the other hand it’s probably important that people see it.

Ways this could’ve been more appropriate (in my opinion): 1. Disco? Seriously? Gloria Gaynor is a card-carrying Christian and this (very overplayed) song is about leaving a toxic relationship, so I don’t see any good reason to choose it. It’s kind of obvious, kind of tacky, kind of cheap… and it seems like the grandkids chose it, rather than it coming from the man himself. If they had chosen an upbeat song from the 1930s or ’40s, I would have got CHILLS. Can you imagine this courageous man skipping around to Glenn Miller or something? It would seem appropriate to his age, yet still has the celebratory vibe they wanted. (Bonus: there’s no lyrics so it’s doubly relevant for someone who learned English as a second language).  2. If I was doing something like this, I wouldn’t do it in the complexes themselves. I understand what other people have been saying about how it’s a triumphant gesture, but I still think it’s tacky to do it on-site. In my version, he’d start by visiting those places in a quiet, respectful pilgrimage, and then he’d visit 2 dozen other cities in an around-the-world montage (I’m ambitious, ok?), dancing in each one of them. It would represent how many experiences he had in spite of the horrors he endured - that’s the ultimate victory.  …Really, it’s the disco thing that’s jarring the most for me - apart from the title of the song, it’s completely wrong. Anything contemporary from World War II would’ve been infinitely more fitting. Now that I’ve said all that, kudos to these kids for loving their grandpa, and kudos to him for having such a positive spirit! Mazal tov, guys. :)

I’m conflicted about this (as others have been in this thread). I think the man is ADORABLE and I love that his grandchildren are celebrating his survival. He seems to be really energetic and youthful-of-heart, that’s probably got a lot to do with his relationship with them. I also don’t think it’s altogether inappropriate to be joyful in a place that caused you such suffering, if that’s the feeling that naturally arises for you. What bothers me about this is that it doesn’t leave room for the other pilgrims to feel their grief, when they’re confronted with these kinds of hijinx. If I was a survivor visiting the camps that day - or even if I was just *me* visiting - I think I would have felt uncomfortable about this.

Personally, I don’t find it disrespectful. The only graves I think he’s dancing on are those of the Nazis that put him there. Sure, he survived, but the bigger picture is that the Jewish people (and other persecuted people) survived. And that’s what I think he’s celebrating. In any case, it’s people like him that should make all of us feel like pussies when we complain about stupid, everyday problems.

    • David Davidson 2 years ago

This guy is awesome. This is Jewish stubbornness. He comes back with his Jewish offspring and dances. To everyone thinking this is disrespectful, I don’t think you understand Judaism. Jewish Orthodox belief (what he was probably instilled with as a child) teaches to uplift even the most evil deeds and places. He is doing just that. Good on him.

There is nothing more wonderful than staring into the face of the darkness that shadows your life, and laughing at it because you survived it. What wonderful grandchildren he has. I love this man.

    • Bane 2 years ago

Find it sort of disrespectful. But if you live though something like that you can do whatever you want.

    • Chad S. 2 years ago

Its not just the fact that he is celebrating his survival. He is also throwing it in the face of the evil men who put him and everyone else there.
