1. Don't deny it (to yourself nor others).

So you f**** up. You posted something insensetive/offensive/stupid/inappropriate on your brand social media account. Breath in, breath out. Maybe nobody will notice it anyway ... just kiddin' of cause everybody will. It's the Internet!

2. Don’t panic.

Just try to go from OMG (what have I done?) mode to Damage control (how can I fix this?) mode as fast as you can.

3. Don’t try to hide it.

There are millions of people out there that are very motivated to spend an indecent amount of time on holding you accountable for stuff like this. Just remove the content if it’s offensive & say you are sorry (if you feel tempted to skip this last "saying sorry" part re-read the previous sentence).

4. Don't be lazy.

No copy-paste messages. Keep it real and assume that you’ll have to hand-craft every apology you’ll write. That’s your penance.

5. Don’t get it twisted.

Yes, some trolls will pop here and there, but they are a part of the ecosystem and all of this it’s kinda your fault anyway ... so if you don't want to end up being accused of sending subliminal iluminati signals, be patient and don’t get provoked.

6. Don't be fake.

Be apologetic. Be polite. Be nice. Explain yourself clearly and concisely. Don't go into too much details and don't be condescending. People mostly just want to voice their opinion and get acknowledged. No need to be a kiss-ass.

7. Don't forget closure and ...

Don't make people work to find out "how it ended". Once you survive to the first wave of outrage, write an apology post/tweet saying what exactly you are sorry for. If the issue is too big/complicated/intricate, post a note or open letter on your Facebook & web page and redirect the inquiries there.

The attention span of us internet people lasts less than Lindsay Lohan's sobriety, take advantage of it (of the situation, not Lindsay Lohan). If the problem is not too serious and you are not losing followers anymore, move on. Go back to publishing your usual content as soon as you can.
