I've actually given this a lot of thought, and I kind of stick with the East appellation. Only because Carroll Gardens and Park Slope are always referred to as “South Brooklyn,” whereas on an actual map, in the Brooklyn scope, they're West or even Northwest. So it would seem that the general Brooklyn Map Reference system is on a Manhattan axis (like it or not), meaning that Williamsburg is…East. Maybe North would have been more appropriate, but just don't say I didn't do my research.
