Ralph Nader and “Uncle Tom” Obama

Professional election-spoiler Ralph Nader hits Fox News on Election Night to call Obama an “Uncle Tom.” posted I hate Ralph Nader for a lot of things, but I think I hate him most for making me agree with Shep Smith.

  • I'm not going to apologize for Ralph, but what he said, and what you say he said, are two very different things. He did not call Obama and Uncle Tom. He made a bad metaphor using the term perjorative term Uncle Tom. That said, Malcom X used this exact metaphor many times when discussing “black leadership”. For examples, see:
http://people.virginia.edu/~sfr/enam982_07/malcolmX.html Plus, really now, he's already pretty much blacklisted. He's not welcome on any talk shows, he's not covered by the mainstream media, and the Democratic party and its apologists (see comments here, for instance) call him much worse that what you say he said. Is he blunt? Yes. Unapologetic? Always. Racist in the David Duke brand of racist? Doubtful. Racist in the way white America has always been racist? Quite possibly, but even there I would argue that if anyone can truly see Americans for what they are, it's Ralph Nader. The piece you didn't see the other night was when Nader did 30 minutes on Real News Network, with Paul Jay, Tom Morris from Capital Hill Blues, and Bill Fletcher from Black Commentator, where they had an excellant discussion on race, politics, Obama, and the exact point that Nader was trying to make on the quoted radio program. Is Obama going to stand up for the poor and the downtrodden, or will he pander to the middle calss, while taking care of his corporate sponsors? Valid question? I think so! To see the segment: http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2008/11/05-8 Get some perspective folks.

  • Shep didn't call his remarks racist, he just asked if he would have rather used different terms. Nader specifically chose a racially hot term, something blacks typically use against other blacks. To have this old white man use it is odd..I'm not saying wrong, I'm saying odd..and the fact that he simply could have used anything else to describe his reservations makes it bizarre. I'm sure he thought it'd make a good soundbite but he's out of his mind if he thinks people will think it's witty.  Uncle Tom is used to describe a black person that sells out his own race and works to serve the 'white' cause. I'm pretty sure Obama has done more for black communities than Nader ever has or ever claimed to do in the future. Again, this is an old white man claiming Obama will either help the poor or sell blacks out..two things that aren't really either/or situations. Even if you decide his choice to use the term is fine, he's stretching it to fit something it's not made for.

  • I have a family member who waited on Nader's restaurant table back during his “Unsafe…” Glory Days and still talks about what a rude, egotistical jerk he was… I once believed in him, but this night he proved that deep down — where it counts — he's a worthless douche.

  • Anybody can call anybody else a “racist” and have the whole world jump on them. There's nothing “racist” about comparing Sen. Obama's future actions to Uncle Sam and Uncle Tom. Maybe “racial.” But the existence of “Race” is and always will be something for us to deal with or deny.

  • These are typical misconceptions about Nader who is a great American who has worked for all citizens on workers rights and protections. Because of him we have the EPA, OSHA, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act and much more. He did not call Obama a name but Smith makes sound that way. This too is the usual sensational and bias “news” from Fox.

  • I find the “spoiler” label offensive. Nader didn't really spoil it for Gore in 2000. That guy ran a lousy campaign and every third party candidate earned enough votes in Florida to bridge Bush's victory margin. Plus there was voter suppression and the election was decided by judges… But beyond all of this, a third party is just that: an alternative to the major parties, not a ploy to weaken one of them.

  • Umm, isn't Nader right? If Obama is perceived to end up helping corporate interests and forgetting about the poor or minorities, won't he be seen as an “Uncle Tom?” Is it really offensive to formulate that as a possibility he might face? For that to be racism or wrong at all, one would have to show that its not a plausible accounting of one path his term could logically take. Nader is obviously hoping it doesn't, and he explicitly formulates the label of Uncle Tom as a possibility conditional on a future path. Shep Smith is posturing. He gets to play the anti-racist for his viewers. That's all these guys do when someone says something at all non-PC.

  • Sheppard Smith is actually a pretty well respected journalist. The rest of Fox, I'd agree, there's not a lot of good journalism going on but he's not a pundit. There was a recent bit on NPR about him, saying how he's actually “fair and balanced.”

  • Ralph's clearly having a stroke, here…check out his right eyelid. I'm sure his brain has no clue what's coming out of his mouth.

  • That's just… totally offensive. I don't even know what to say, that's so awful. Talk about a sore loser. What will it take to enlighten Nader that his rhetoric and “spoiler” tactics undermine any ability he would have had to advance his ideas and get them implemented by a front-runner candidate? Bleh.

  • I never thought I'd applaud a Fox News reporter, but what is better than him insisting repeatedly that Nader has been “reduced to irrelevance?”
