Response to Here’s How 10 People Visualize Their Depression:
Sometimes it feels like a bottomless pit that is so black it absorbs all light. I know that I shouldn’t let myself fall into it, but the desire to fall in is so strong. Fighting the depression is hard and painful, while the depression itself is blissfully numb.
No one is asking that we teach children the details of the atrocities that wrre committed. We are asking that the false myths surrounding our history be ended. We are asking that Native people not be reperesented with racist stereotypes. We are asking that we not whitewash history.
Its not the lack if accuracy that is the problem.
It is the blatent lies.
It is the myth that America was a free country that was waiting to be scooped up.
It is the erasure of a people. It is the problematic narrative.
Another example of, It isn’t valid unless it happens to a white male.
If your response to any of this is review is “sure it’s bad but at least it’s starting a conversation” or “at least it got made”, no. You are wrong. Because it’s worse than not being made. It is a fictional history that fist erases the fact that it was Trans Women of Color that are the reason we have equality today. It was the non gender conforming, the Trans people, the femme men butch women who all could not pass as Cis or Straight or both, that took the hits. That created visibility. That made sure we have what levels of equality we do now. It is erasure. And that doesn’t even touch the fact that the Cis lesbians aren’t even a part of this story. it’s about a white guy who has a lot of hetero privilege from the Midwest having an experience so the white hetero community can feel good about going to next year’s pride parade. It’s not about the true history. So if your response includes “it’s bad but” you are part of the problem. And this movie is an expression of the fact that we are largely telling the non gender conforming members of our community to go back in the closet. We got our equality quit rocking the boat.
I am so sorry that this is the life you have to lead.
