The Emotional Stages Of College Rejection

Rejected! Rejected! You just got rejected! RE-JE-CT-ED!!!!!!!

So it's that time of year again: college admissions decision season. Like many of my peers, I approached this volatile (great SAT word) few months with apprehension, anxiety, hope, and fear. But when the decisions rolled out, I was greeted with a few not-so-nice outcomes: rejection. We all know rejection sucks, but for some reason it sucks a little more when a college admissions committee tells you the past four years of your life just haven't done the job. So, here are the stages of receiving your college denial.

1. Anticipation.

You've worked for years, you've waited for months, and now you're ready to know. All you can think about is which lucky school is going to have you wandering its hallowed halls for the next four years.

2. Excitement.

The decision is now available and for some unknown reason you're excited!!!

3. Realization.

The first words aren't "Congratulations" and you can literally feel your dreams getting smashed by Miley on her wrecking ball.

4. Awkward Confusion.

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? You had stellar grades, an 86000 on your SAT, 312 extra-curriculars, the BEST teacher recs (cause the teachers actually knew you), killer essays, and your mom's friend's cat's vet's sister's husband is on the board of directors!

6. Sadness.

You can't help but shed a few tears, I mean it's not like you day dreamed about tanning in the quad or anything.

7. Confusion Relapse.

After the waterworks start to clog up and stop, you wonder if this whole thing was just a mistake. I mean if Johns Hopkins and UCLA can send out accidental acceptances, who is to say this isn't an accidental denial. I mean you were totally more qualified than a lot of the people from your school who got in.

8. Anger.

HOW COULD THEY REJECT YOU. I MEAN WHAT THE F*@K?!?!!?!? THEIR ADMISSIONS OFFICE IS GOING TO PAY

So what if a certain college didn't want you? You are awesome and you will do whatever you want in life because you won't let anyone stop you. You have other amazing college and life choices, so don't let one admissions committee's mistake ruin you.
