Here’s How Hard it is to Get a Job If You’re Black

Black millennials face unemployment rates that are twice as high as young whites. Take a look, and then check out how we can close the race gap.

    1. Young black adults (we’re talking aged 18 to 34) face an unemployment rate of nearly 17%. That’s more than TWICE the unemployment rate of young whites.

    2. Racial disparities are so stark that a young black man with an Associates degree has the same chance of getting a job as a white high school drop out.

    3. In fact, a young black man generally needs to have two more levels of education than a white man to compete for the same job:

    4. The gap’s not as wide if you’re female, but it’s still bad: a young black woman with a professional degree has the same chance of landing a job as a white woman with a bachelor’s degree.

    5. And racial disparities don’t just affect job prospects, they also impact wages! The average median income for a white Millennial is $25,000, the average median income for an African American Millennial is $19,800. That’s a difference of $5,200!

    7. But, even though young white men have a better shot at landing a job than young black men at every level of education, we do know that the race gap shrinks as young people climb the education ladder.

    8. The same is true for young black women.
