    Here's My Problem With #NoBraDay.

Why #NoBraDay has nothing to do with Breast Cancer Awareness

Here's my problem with ‪#‎NoBraDay‬. This "movement" does not raise awareness for breast cancer at all. There is no mention of self-examination, such as how to perform a self-exam, what to look for, and what to do if you find an abnormality. There is no mention of mammography, such as where to get one, when you should get one, and at what age you should start. There are no powerful, breathtaking photos of women who had to have mastectomies, or stories of how they lost their self-confidence and had to build it back up. There are no photos of women who just underwent weeks of chemotherapy. There are no stories of husbands, wives, children, mothers, and fathers, who lost their loved ones to the disease. There is no mention of how to donate for breast cancer research such as, the best organizations to donate to and the ones who use the most money towards research. So, here are some actual facts (Source: Susan G. Komen)

It is estimated that in 2015, over 230,000 women will be diagnosed and over 40,000 will result in death.

Over 2,300 men will be diagnosed and over 400 will result in death. Every 21.5 women out of 100,000 will die from the disease.

White women are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer.

Most deaths occur in women aged 50 and older.

In 2012, 1.7 million cases were diagnosed worldwide.

Mammography correctly identifies 84% of women who have breast cancer.

Every year, starting at the age of 40, women should be screened for breast cancer.

Susan G. Komen Foundation uses more than 80% of their donations for research, or $0.83 of every $1.00.

In 2013, 124 new research grants were funded.

Hoboken Family Planning, located at 124 Grand Street, offers free or low cost Breast Cancer Screening.
