1. Mark was born and raised in Michigan

Mark was born and raised in Livingston County where he attended high school, eventually graduating valedictorian. Oh yeah, Mark also played football, baseball and was a Boy Scout.

2. Mark’s father was a high school science teacher and his mother was a registered nurse

Watching his parents work hard to provide for their children, Mark learned the value of hard work and that a good job comes from a good education.

3. Mark has always been a fighter

He grew up in Livingston County, where he was one of the smallest offensive linemen you’ll ever see play high school football. Nonetheless, each game and every series Mark lined up across from his opponent no matter their size and did his part to help his team win. That’s what he’ll do for Michigan.

4. Mark worked his way through college flipping burgers

Mark worked his way through Albion College flipping burgers and pumping gas, eventually graduating summa cum laude.

5. Provided Meals on Wheels to senior citizens

Mark ran the Community Action Agency, a nonprofit with over 200 employees that provided early childhood education to preschoolers; helped connect seniors with resources in their communities; and provided unemployed workers the tools they needed to get back on their feet.

6. Mark chose public service to make a difference

In 1994, Mark took his fight for his community to the next level, serving on the Battle Creek City Commission and later in the state House and state Senate – where he earned a reputation for fighting back against the outsourcing of Michigan jobs.

7. Mark helped rescue Michigan’s auto industry

Mark voted to rescue the auto industry in Congress, personally lobbied the GM CEO to move the Chevy Traverse to Michigan - instead of Tennessee - and to build the Chevy Sonic in Michigan instead of Mexico. He also fought to keep a brake manufacturer here in Michigan, instead of moving to Mexico.

8. Mark was pepper-sprayed outside Michigan’s Capitol standing up for - and with - Michigan workers

When Snyder passed Right to Work legislation late at night with zero public input or debate, Michiganders were furious. And so was Mark. Joining tens of thousands of hard-working Michiganders, Mark peacefully protested outside the Capitol and as a reward he and dozens of concerned citizens were pepper-sprayed.

9. Mark understands the only way to build an economy that works for everyone is from the bottom up and the middle out, not the top down

Mark’s top budget priorities will be focused on small business job growth and preschool, K-12 and higher education. After all, a good job comes from a quality education. Mark will be the education governor and mean it.
