How Wisconsinites Feel About Ron Johnson's Obstructionism And Statements On SCOTUS As Told By Parks And Recs

It has been nearly a month since a seat on the Supreme Court opened up. Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson is leading the charge, along with the likes of Donald Trump, on obstructing President Obama from having any nominee considered by the Senate. While the Senate has the right to vote down a nominee, they do not have the right not to allow the President to put forward someone for consideration. Wisconsinites aren't impressed with Ron Johnson's obstructionism. We can only imagine the reactions of Wisconsin citizens as Sen. Johnson continued to double-down on his obstruction tactics.

1. When a seat on the Supreme Court first opened up, Ron Johnson told us: “I strongly agree that the American people should decide the future direction of the Supreme Court by their votes for president and the majority party in the U.S. Senate...America needs Supreme Court justices who share Justice Scalia’s commitment to applying the Constitution as written and to the freedom it secures"

2. Then, Johnson said that not doing anything about the Supreme Court is in fact doing something: "I would also say that doing nothing is also an action, kind of bolstering the advice that, let's let the American people decide through their vote who the next president is that should make that appointment...So again, I think it's blown way out of proportion, quite honestly, what the people have said [with regards to the Supreme Court nomination]."

Noticing he had walked himself into a trap, Johnson argued that even though it is part President Obama's job to appointee Supreme Court Justices, the Republicans have the right to not allow him to do his job: "I realize the voters elected President Obama in 2012, but they also, in 2014, elected enough Republican senators to gain a majority in the Senate so we control the confirmation process. And these are two supposedly coequal branches of government involved in this filling of a Supreme Court vacancy. So President Obama nominates. The Senate advises and consents. And I don't know how the process plays out. I'm not in control of it, but you know, the consent phase would be, you know, whether we decide to hold hearings, to not hold hearings, whether we have a vote, whether we vote up or down. But not acting is also acting. It's also fulfilling that consent portion of our advise-and-consent."

4. Things became more and more confusing as Johnson tried to justify his ridiculous obstructionism: "Let the American people decide. So, if president Obama appoints a Justice Scalia clone, my guess is we confirm a Justice Scalia clone. That’s not gonna happen. We already know the type of justices he put on the court. And so I doubt a liberal activist justice judge would be confirmed by the Senate. And if we choose to not to confirm, either by not acting or by voting that choice down, either way it’s an action. It’s not giving consent to his nominee. And again, the advice is, let the American people decide the direction of this country. I think it’s a very reasonable position."

5. The Supreme Court is virtually deadlocked thanks to the Republican's partisan obstructionism, which Johnson confirmed by saying: "And let me assure everybody, because I know there's some concerns, the Republican majority in the Senate will not allow the Supreme Court to flip. You can take that one to the bank, we will not allow that to happen."

Finally Johnson told us what we knew all along - he and the Republican Party are willing to keep the Supreme Court in a virtual deadlock for a year because President Obama is a Democrat: " if a conservative president’s replacing a conservative justice, there’s a little more accommodation to it."
