The passenger pigeon was, at one point, the most abundant species of bird in North America. Their habitats were the lush deciduous forests of the northeast. The industrial revolution eventually lead to this species demise. The forests were cleared in order to harvest lumber and make room for agricultural opportunity. With the change of an era and technological advances came an increased need for land to be dedicated for industry. For every advancement there is a hidden cost. Be mindful of the impacts of today’s society. To prevent deforestation consider altering your diet to consist of more plant based meals, go paperless, plant a tree to replace the ones lost, and be sure to recycle and buy recycled goods.

As forests disappear under the chainsaw to make way for agriculture, plantations and infrastructure, saola are being squeezed into smaller spaces. The added pressure from rapid and large-scale infrastructure in the region is fragmenting the saola’s habitat. Conservationists are concerned that this is allowing hunters easy access to the once untouched forest of the saola and may reduce genetic diversity in the future. In order to save this species, the first thing we should do is to control deforestation. We can take steps toward reducing the activities that threaten the environment. First, we can grow fruits and vegetables in our own home gardens to reduce the needs of the society on the commercial agriculture. Additionally, we can be more conscious of the products we chose to buy, especially those made of wood and lumber.

Saola

Current status: ENDANGERED
The main threat to the survival of orangutan populations in the wild is the massive expansion of palm oil plantations in Borneo and Sumatra. Palm oil is present in a wide variety of household products, including baked goods, cosmetics, cleaning agents, and biofuel.The industry is linked to major issues such as deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty and indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced. Over 90% of orangutan habitat has been destroyed in the last 20 years. Since the orangutan is a keystone species, threats to the orangutan population affect the entire ecosystem. As a consumer, you have the power to make healthier lifestyle choices to reduce your contribution to deforestation.

Orangutan

Current status: Endangered
The Golden Lion Tamarin is now now considered one of the most endangered species and mammals of the New World. The habitat of the lion tamarin is most threatened by the advancement of the human civilization. Forest destruction has greatly diminished the amount of forest habitat available to them. >5% of the coastal forest in northeastern Brazil remains. The lion tamarin was reintroduced into its current habitat in Brazil after it went extinct in the wild. In early efforts to conserve the species, there was limited forest area for the 1,5000 lion tamarins that were to be introduced into the forest. Non-government organizations worked to change this. They woked with the Golden Lion Tamarin Association to purchase land comprised of forest and cattle pasture.to sere as additional space for the species.
