There were once nine subspecies of tiger.

These include the Siberian, Bengal, Indochinese, Malayan, Sumatran, South China, Bali, Caspian, and Javan tigers. Sadly, the last three are now extinct and all surviving tiger species remain endangered.

The tiger is the largest member of the cat family.

Tigers have thick, reddish coats, narrow black, brown, or gray stripes, white bellies, and white and black tails.

Tigers have varied diets.

They mainly consume deer, wild pigs, water buffalo, and antelope, but are also known to hunt sloth bears, leopards, crocodiles, pythons, monkeys, and hares.

In the last century, tiger populations have fallen from about 100,000 to 3,274 globally.

That's about a 97% reduction.

Tigers have lost about 93% of their natural habitat.

This is mostly due to the expansion of cities and agriculture. People and tigers continue to compete for space in areas where tigers survive in the wild. Smaller habitats also leave tiger species more vulnerable to poaching.

Climate change is also a threat to tiger survival.

Climate change threatens to further destroy tiger habitats and forests worldwide, eventually driving the remaining species closer to extinction.

Araeng is one of the few animals born at PTWRC that had to be hand raised. Now an adult, Araeng is very playful but can be shy among strangers and only trusts his keeper, Mr. Rong, and Wildlife Programs Director, Nick Marx, who raised him.
