In one weekend, my beloved hometown of Dayton, Ohio, was visited by the KKK and was then struck by a deadly tornado. My photos document the strength, vibrancy, and progress of a city that has so long been labeled as a "ghost town." These photos prove that whether Dayton is confronted with hatred, oppression, or tragedy, my city is strong.
Interviewed and photographed by Whitney Saleski, who lost her dad, Stan, to suicide two years ago. She created her photo project, the Stanley Sessions, to reduce mental health stigma in his honor.
Dayton, Ohio is a hub for art and culture, and local women continue to take on important positions in the community. In her new photo series, Whitney Saleski photographs women as they are AND how they want to be seen.
