Johnny Depp And Dakota Johnson Take To The Red Carpet In Boston

The stars were in town for the screening of "Black Mass."

Boston natives are no stranger to the name Whitey Bulger. The notorious gangster ran the streets of Southie with his Winter Hill Gang for over two decades. So, when it was announced that Boston would host the screening for the new biopic about Bulger's reign as head of the city's Irish mob, the crowds turned out.

A little before 4pm, city police officers began setting up barricades and redirecting traffic. The red carpet and lighting were already in place, as were the fans. When the sun finally set behind the historic Coolidge Corner Theatre, the stars that came out weren't only celestial.

Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), who plays Bulger's girlfriend Lindsey Cyr, was the first of the big names to walk the crowds and thank people for coming out.

Around 7pm, just before the screening was scheduled to begin, Johnny Depp made an entrance to the chanting of his name. The film's headliner greeted as many fans as he could before going inside to make a speech. Depp, who does not watch his own films, came back outside before the movie began to meet more of his fans.

"He seemed truly grateful that so many people had taken the time to come out to see him and support his movie. You could tell this was a project he really cared about," said Jennifer Nguyen, a local who attended the event.

"Black Mass" opens in theaters on Sept. 18.
