    Ek Katha Gulabi Si

Sumedha says, "The storyteller in me has mostly been exposed to the performing aspect of the storytelling on-stage. This has ingrained in me the only possibility of Kathak as a ‘performing’ art and never a critical thinking art. Storytelling in Kathak in my view, is not just bound to ‘tell’ an audience how much you know about the dance form , but to convey how much you can relate it to the things that surround and govern you. Being ‘classical’ in its nature, Kathak through my perspective shouldn’t rule out the very roots of its inception : the temples, the nature . To me is to give meaning to every movement and to holistically understand the ‘why’ behind doing it." Inspired by Sumedha's quest to make this 'katha' more meaningful and relatable, I've tried to draw parallels between Kathak and everyday lives of people in the city as well as its heritage and culture. Through a set of images depicting different Kathak mudras and postures, placed in fitting backgrounds in the city of Jaipur, I sought to weave a story, perhaps a katha that is more vibrant and gleeful. -Palak Gupta (photographer)
