Advice For Incoming College Freshmen

College is one of the best times in a young adults life, but it is often overwhelming for 18 year olds. Just think about it. A few months ago, you were a senior in high school and you still had to ask whether you could go to the bathroom or not. Now, you're choosing all your own classes, you have to figure out how to survive on your own, and running to mom and dad is not as easy as it used to be. You're an adult now, and that is really scary to think about. But with these 10 pieces of advice, the transition into college life will be easier to manage.

10. You're Not Alone

Being a freshman at college is nerve racking and wanting to fit in is normal. You might feel like you're alone, but you're not! Everyone else is going through the same thing you are. It's a new environment, it's a new experience, just take a breath and realize that someone feels they same way you do.

9. Don't Stress About The Unnecessary

Do not take more than 13 hours your first semester. Ease into it. Yes, you want to finish your basics and head right into your major, but transitioning into college is hard and having 13+ hours is overwhelming. No one will get mad and no one will judge you for taking it easy. Starting off with 12 hours, and then 13 the next semester, and so on and so forth.

8. Show Some Spirit

I don't know about you, but when I was in highschool, I had absolutely no school spirit. None. But now that I'm in college, I try to make an effort to show school spirit. This is the university that you will be in for the next four years, show off, be proud of your school.

7. Working Is Hard, But Worth It

Take it from me, having a job is really hard when you are trying to balance work, school, and a social life. But through working, I have really learned what it means to do all three and not be overwhelmed. You really begin to think what is important to you. It's all about time management.

6. Utilize Groups

Groups are helpful in the long run when you make the intentions and roles clear. Everyone needs to do their part and they know it. It is also a great way to make friends.

I know you want to impress people with whatever you're learning, but there is a difference between sharing knowledge and rubbing it into someone's face. Don't be a know-it-all.

Speaking of not knowing, it's okay not knowing what you want to do or what you want to major in. It's okay if you start to major in one thing, and then change your mind. That's what college is about. Change. Figuring out you want to do. There is no shame in not knowing.

3. Stay Organized

Having a daily planner saved me countless times and it WILL help you. Staying organized may be a little difficult, but once you get into the habit of writing down deadlines and dates, life will be so much easier!

2. Go To Class

Your parents are not spending thousands and thousands of dollars just for you to skip class. One or two times is okay--things come up and maybe you are not physically able to attend--but class is important. If you miss one class, no big deal, but you might end up missing more than you intended.
