10 Things You Didn't Know About Lulu Chow Wang

Lulu Chow Wang, one of the world’s most influential women in investments and philanthropy, addressed the members of the Wellesley College Class of 2016 and an international audience of their family and friends at Wellesley’s 138th Commencement Exercises on Friday, May 27. Here are 10 things you probably didn't know about Lulu.

1.

She restores and drives vintage racecars. When she races she is often one of the only women on the track.

She was born in a car in New Delhi, because the ambulance did not arrive in time. She then moved to New York City at age 4.

3.

She's a Wall Street pioneer who paved the way for other women in investing, and was named "one of the world's most powerful women" by the Asia Society.

She named her firm, Tupelo Capital Managements, after Lake Waban’s Tupelo Point.

5.

She and her husband, Tony, collect American paintings, furniture and folk art.

Her advice to other Wellesley women is “as much as we want to do everything, we have to choose the things that really matter to us and where we can make a difference. And that is really how you can make a difference in the world.”

Talk about trailblazing! When this fearless woman launched her company in the 1990s, it became the fastest growing startup on Wall Street.

Her mother lived to be over 100 years old. Wang describes her “a class act, a wonderful mother, a vibrant, intelligent partner to my father, and a great inspiration to her daughters.”

She majored in English literature, and credits her strong writing skills with helping to launch her remarkable career in finance; she started as a financial writer before becoming an analyst.

There are three generations of Wellesley women in her family, including Mei-Mei Tuan '88 who ensured students would have a constant supply of s’mores by funding the fire pit at the Lulu Chow Wang Campus Center.
