10 Tips for Navigating the Quarter System

The quarter system at UC San Diego can be a surprising adjustment for some students - here are a few tips to help you navigate this transition.

1. Get started on assignments and studying early. In other words, do not procrastinate!!

2. Figure out which study method works best for you.

3. Balance extracurricular activities and academics. Know your priorities and stick to them.

4. Enroll in classes wisely. Keep in mind the workload and test dates for each class.

5. Don’t worry too much if you can’t get into a class you want. The beauty of the quarter system is that it lets you take a variety of classes per year.

6. You may have a lot of things to keep up with in a quarter. To help, use a calendar/planner.

7. STAY HEALTHY! Maintain a healthy diet and get an appropriate amount of sleep every night.

8. Don’t get left behind! Quarters go quickly so if you need help try going to office hours or sign up for programs like OASIS.

9. Don’t hesitate to try new things! You may discover a hidden passion of yours either through rec classes (like yoga), clubs or classes. The opportunities in college are ENDLESS.

10. Be proactive in fighting stress. College should be more than studying 24/7.
