The stage is Westeros and the players are bountiful. Similarly to a chessboard, every character has an important role to play and even more important moves to make. The game is being played for the Iron Throne and all actors are participating whether they're aware of it or not. There are unwritten rules to the game; ruthlessness, cunning, and strength are three of the main characteristics needed to succeed. Failure in the game is marked by death, while success is determined by where you started and where you end up. The characters change, the seasons change, and even some faces change (see Jaqen H'gar) but the game will always remain the same. Below is a list of the key characters that have participated in some significant way through 4 seasons of Game of Thrones:

Robert Arryn -- The game is set back into motion once the Hand of the King dies. His death makes everyone come out of their respective holes to begin scheming and plotting. Actually, his death was a result of scheming and plotting (see the Lannister's) and just another move for someone to get closer to the throne.

Robert Baratheon -- technically he "won" the game of thrones by being King but died drunkenly fighting a wild boar, so that's a pretty big loss. WIthout a doubt King Robert was the best King we've seen so far on the show and that's only because of how awful everybody else is.

Eddard Stark (Ned) -- played the game with loyalty, dignity, and honor. And loss BIG time. Not only does his head get lopped off but it starts a chain of events that leads to all of his family being thrown into despair. One of the worst players in the game overall. Played every hand dealt to him absolutely wrong and ends up looking up at his own body as a result.

Catelyn Stark -- at one or another time has custody of TWO Lannisters and eventually lets go of both of them while at war, with, um, the Lannisters! (the two best Lannisters, it should be noted)Stupid move 1. Lets her son marry some rando off the streets. Stupid move 2. Just not a good showing for Catelyn in the game and she loses in the grandest of fashions. But, if you've read the books, you might know her turn to play might not be quite over yet.

Sansa Stark -- started off as an incredibly naive rookie in the game but, as we all know, life comes at you fast. Sansa has had one of the better character growth charts throughout "Game of Thrones" and the main reason is because she started learning how to play the game. Watching your dad's head go down the steps like a slinky and being tortured by King Joffrey tends to expedite the learning process.

Rickon Stark -- has been hiding with Osha somewhere in the North since midway through Season 3. Playing the game quite well actually, his only job is to hide until it's safe and we all know it's not safe to be a Stark. Absolutely killing the game right now. Seriously though, where in the name of the Old Gods and the New is this kid?

Joffrey Baratheon -- awful player in the game. You can't go around torturing folk and beng a whiny little good for nothing and not expect to get yours. By the time Joffrey is choking on karma at his wedding it has become very obvious that it does not matter where you start or who you are, but instead how you go about playing the game.

Tommen Baratheon -- barely old enough to play with swords let alone be a part of the game. Seems innocent enough, but how long will that last in a world where your own mother almost poisons you?

Myrcella Baratheon -- being held hostage in Dorne to ensure the two sides don't go to war. Hey, let's sign a peace treaty, okay cool, wanna seal the deal by taking my child? Obviously, how else would we do it? The game's crazy ya'll.

Tywin Lannister -- the grandfather of the previous two participants in the game. Uses all of his (grand)children as chess pieces and has been making major boss moves for a very long time. He is an original gangsta' of the game, an OG. That being said, he always underestimated and underappreciated one major player in the game and as a result Tywin got the same treatment as the previous two Hand's of the King. Comeupance.

Tyrion Lannister -- a master in the game.The little lion plays all sides with his quick wit, tongue, and axe skills (see Blackwater Bay). Yet the short lived Hand of the King ends up falling in love and that is never a good thing in the game. Also being accused of killing the King, that's also never a good thing. Hopefully, Tyrion can continue his wily ways across the Narrow Sea.

Cersei and Jaime Lannister -- Ew. Just nasty players. I guess Jaime gets a little better. After he pushes Bran out of a window because ew.

Lord Varys -- probably one of the most underrated players in the game. Varys either knows about or planned everything that happens in King's Landing through the network of his "little birds". The same seems to hold true of events across the ocean and time will tell if he can manuever the same in the court of the Mother of Dragons.

Lord Petr "Littlefinger" Baelish -- probably the greatest player in the game, considering his humble beginnings and how he turned that into being an actual pimp and then that into being a Lord. The risk of hiding Sansa seems maybe not the best move in the game but I feel that LIttlefinger is not doing this for reasons as sentimental as he claims. Renly Baratheon -- remember him? Got killed by his brother's demon-smoke-monster baby? That sucked.

Stannis Baratheon -- an old warrior in the game who is slowly learning to change his ways. This is working out for him with the demon-smoke-monster babies and the lighting people on fire everywhere. Maybe going to the north to go fight the white walkers not the best move, but we'll see how that works out.

Margaery Tyrell -- Queen of Westeros (sorta, kinda, at least for now). She is a sharp and willing participant in the game. All the people of Westeros can only hope Queen Margaery will prove herself more worthy than her horrible step-mother.

Jon Snow -- me and everyone else's favorite character (don't lie). Not the best player in the game, has way too much of Ned Stark in him and that never ends well. Has managed to play the Wildlings and his brothers on the wall well enough to stay alive and be a leader. Hopeully, he can continue to do this with Stannis.

Davos Seaworth -- has managed to make himself a player in the game by latching onto Stannis. Seems to be the only person who can talk sense into the would be King other than crazy fire lady.

Melisandre -- crazy fire lady. Basically the leader of Stannis' army. Also loves lighting people on fire.

Olenna Tyrell (Mother of Thorns) -- scene stealer. Just more please. Also influtential in what goes on in King's Landing and now that Tywin is gone, she can only become more powerful.

Brienne of Tarth -- close to saving Renly, almost got Jaime back in one piece, close to saving Arya, and just steps away from Sansa. Brienne "No Luck" Tarth should be her name. Faithful, loyal and righteous. She will be dead soon, just can't be that good. (hopefully my man Poderick Payne Squire Extraordinaire doesn't get caught up in Briennes tomfoolery)

Ser Jorah -- what's he going to do now that the Mother of Dragons hates him? Played the game well until he got played.Those are the risks you take though.

Meera Reed/Jojen Reed/Hodor -- helpful in getting Bran to the three eyed Raven stuck in a tree dude. Essential to the game.

Osha -- she's a great reminder of where in the name of Waldo and Carmen San Diego is Rickon Stark? (meme of Rickon as where's waldo)

Daenery's Brother -- played the game to get the crown and that is what he got.

Khal Drogo -- wanted to ride his horses across the Narrow Sea that plan didn't have a chance to fail. Would have loved to see him fight the mountain or the hound or the Dorne viper dude. A battle royale would be appreciated in the DVD's or something Game of Thrones people.

Drogon -- A dragon is missing. You cannot just misplace your dragon.

Balon & Yara Greyjoy -- are they done paticipating in the game or are they just waiting on the Iron Islands to strike back later? I hope Yara comes back and kills those Boltons. Just cannot go around sending people's junk in the mail.

Roose Bolton -- has managed to back-stab and weasel his way into becoming Warden of the North. Has played the game extremely well. MIght make the mistake of trusting his creep of a son though.

Ramsay (Snow) Bolton -- the Joffrey of the North. Really just a creep but one that actually has some cunning at war and fighting. Skills that can get you far in the game but they cannot be all you rely on.

Theon "Reek" Greyjoy -- he lost. He lost over and over again. Hopefully he can have one solid victory before it's all said and done.

Robb Stark -- Why? Just WHY? I still don't get it and I sort of refuse to accept it. George R. R. Martin is a cruel and sick man.

Arya Stark -- total and complete bada**. Valar Morguhilus. Valar Dolaris.

Daenerys Targaeryn -- the Mother of Dragons. Helping slaves in a continent that's far away from the continent you wish to rule isn't the best way to start your turn in the game. That being said, she's the Mother of Dragons and if she can figure out who to trust, there is no reason she cant be the next winner in the Game of Thrones.
