    Gas Station/ Self Service Debate

Safety and convenience vs jobs and possible disaster

Oregon and New Jersey are the only two states that don't allow self service at the pump. Why has this basic service fallen to the wayside over the years? Having your gasoline pumped for you, doesn't seem to be a major cost increase. So whats really going on here? The profit margin is probably the culprit here. I'm sure that comes as no surprise to anyone, as this world once again ticks everyday towards monetary insistence of status and power.

Personally, a gas station attendant was my first full time vocation in life. I remember learning the strength of character in ensuring safety and service. The job not only gave me a stepping stone in life, it also gave me a strong sense of pride and accomplishment. All walks of life share gasoline as a common factor of everyday life, along with the basic need to be employed and productive. As we have "progressed" as a race, we seem to have this consistent behavior pattern of making everything in life easier, faster, more convenient. So why do we pump our own gasoline? The safety factor alone, is a strong argument for gas stations to be full service.

How many jobs have we lost through the years over profit, profit, profit? Full service gas stations would provide many new jobs across this great land, and how can that be a bad thing? I for one am becoming quite tired of this systematic erosion of the core of America. Profits have distanced U.S. from the factor of our existence. Life is not about me, me, me, it's about U.S.! That is the driving force behind our future. If we continue look at this life from the perspective of "how does that affect me" we may end up needing each other really soon, and we don't even know our neighbors anymore.

I have worried for some years now, do to past attacks of 9/11 and especially Oklahoma City. No one ever thought planes could be used in such a devastating manner. Why do we just let anyone pump an extremely volatile substance? We all have seen the destruction that can be caused by a mixture of diesel fuel and fertilizer. Please witness just how many people are at the gas station on your next visit. I do not want an attack to be our eye opening need for this simple fix to an exiting problem of safety. Jobs are an ever necessary need in America, so why can't we do this? Do we really need to make our elderly get out of their vehicles to pump their gas? I for one am very glad my aging Mother lives in Oregon, giving her one less thing to worry about, as she has earned it.

I believe that if we are forced to take other people's jobs from them, then there should be a mandatory 15% discount for self check outs as well as self serve, with no cost increase. But of course that would take away from profits, profits, profits! The divide in the classes is getting to much to overcome, without the cog that keeps this country running, (U.S.), there will be more chaos.
