"Demi never said 'hey I'm black now!' she simply said she's 1% African meaning she was surprised to learn that about herself LET HER LIVE."

Singer and actress, Demi Lovato revealed on Twitter that she took a DNA test where she found out that she is "1% African".

I did a DNA test and found out I'm mainly Spanish, with Native American, SCANDINAVIAN (which I had NO idea), Irish, BRITISH....

She appears to be really thrilled to be 1% African.

It wasn't very long until some people on Twitter started dragging the star about her newfound ancestry.

One user joked and gave her a Nigerian name to go with her new found ancestry.

People are literally dying because of their blackness and Demi Lovato is out here like "wow I'm 1% African - isn't that cute?"

The criticism led to the star tweeting about the comments she had received. "Some of y'all are mean af," she said.

Just thought it was cool and totally random. Some of y'all are mean af. Twitter sucks. 😔

But lucky for Demi, many people did defend her.

Demi never said "hey I'm black now!" She simply said she's 1% African meaning she was surprised to learn that about herself LET HER LIVE

Some people were confused as to why Demi was being criticised for sharing her ancestry.

    - Today on why I still do not understand the human race: Why should anyone be mad about Demi lovato discovering she's 1% African? 😟😑😑

Do not understand why people mad at Demi for the 1% African thing. It's just the way she is and is a fact. Please chill brothers and sisters.

And were more concerned that she doesn't get the same attention when she talks about mental health.

When demi is set to release a mental health awareness documentary vs when demi says she's 1% African

Some users want Demi to be proud of her new ancestry.

@ddlovato Gurl don't let it bother you. You did nothing wrong. Knowing your ancestry is an amazing thing. Be proud of it.

@ddlovato this makes me sad, I was so excited to see the results! It's so interesting learning about our backgrounds! I think it's dope!!
