5 Tips For Playing Pokemon Go At UVic

Everything you need to know about playing Pokemon Go on campus.

Where to go

* The library - With three PokeStops nearby and the high traffic from the quad, the front door to the library is an excellent place to mill around.

* The bus loop - With the SUB, the Bookstore and Campus Security all nearby, this is an excellent place for catching a wide variety of types from normal and bug to flying and poison. (Just make sure to BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS.)

* Felicita’s - The pub has declared 2-4pm the Pokemon happy hour and will set out lures accordingly.

* The ECS and Petch buildings - Multiple PokeStops reside between ECS and the Petch building. Some are so close together that if two or more have lures, you can often take advantage of both zones at the same time.

* Finnerty Gardens - The wonderful garden walk is also crawling with Pokemon, most notably a host of Pikachu.

Looking for lures?

* ECS and Petch - It's not hard to find yourself within range of multiple PokeStops here. Multiple lures are a common occurrence, especially between classes.

* The quad - Easy access makes the quad a favourite for lures on each of its sides.

* SUB - With lures at Felicita's and the constant flow from the residences and the busses, the SUB frequently has at least one lure running at any given time.

What you can expect to catch

* You can expect to see the same Pokemon at UVic as you could anywhere else in town: Pidgy, Zubat, Drowzee and Spearow.

* More rarely, you can also find Koffing, Jigglypuff, Venonat and Polywhirl.

* And if you happen to be exceptionally lucky, there have been sightings of Blastoise, Hitmonlee and Snorlax.

Gyms

The gym scene is alive and well on campus. There are three that are liable to change color on the hour:

* At the Campus Security building - Rumour even has it that Bookstore employees and Campus Security members also jump in on these battles.

* In the Turpin courtyard - Another gym hides among the flowers of the Ian Ross Memorial Garden, with a slightly slower turnover rate due to its slightly isolated location.

* And finally right in front of the library - This is likely the most frequently besieged gym on campus. Pokemon left here can be expected to return to your collection within the hour with gym leaders at 1900+ CP.

Only have WiFi?

For those with limited or no data, it’s helpful to know where you can reach PokeStops and a solid signal.

* The stops between Petch and ECS are accessible to anyone with UVic internet access.

* Decent WiFi around Cunningham offers access to some of the PokeStops in the quad as well as a few more around its edges.

* For those looking to defeat gyms using only WiFi, the library is the place to be since a few PokeStops and a gym are all in range.

* And lastly around the bus stops, the SUB and the bookstore provide decent coverage so you can catch Pokemon while waiting for the bus.
