8 Reasons Why I Hate Nigerians

I am a Nigerian that has travelled all over the world and seen many cultures. Even though I am Nigerian, there are some things out there that people have told me that they hate about Nigerians. They are mostly generalisations, so no one should take what I say to heart.

1. They can’t be trusted

I think this would be at the top of everybody’s list on why they hate Nigerians. It is common knowledge that a lot of online scammers are Nigerian. They are also known to be drug barons in South Africa and prostitutes in Italy/Spain. But not all Nigerians are like that, trust me ;)

2. They are loud

Anyone who has lived with a Nigerian or around Nigerians can attest to the fact that we are loud. I won’t deny it. From talking on the phone to worshipping in churches, Nigerians can be exceptionally loud. The quiet ones like me are quite few, but I think a Nigerian’s mind set is that if you want to be heard, you need to shout (which I think is quite true)

3. They are hypocrites

Nigerians are very, very religious people and you would think it would show in the way the country is run or how people conduct their everyday lives. Every Fridays and Sundays, mosques and churches are filled to the brim with people from all walks of life. From gossiping housewives to thieving politicians to armed robbers to prostitutes all sharing the same roof, all praising God. Then during the week, everyone goes back to their normal lives like they still have Sunday/Friday to repent for their sins. Sad reality

4. They are judgemental

“Ooh… look at her wearing a short skirt” or “hmmm.. he doesn’t go to church at all” Nigerians love to judge whoever they see or envy. I think it makes them feel better about themselves when they put people down because of whatever they do that makes them human. There is also this thing about having to be perfect in everyone’s eyes which makes people fake to each other. It is only in Nigeria that you will have girls who call themselves best friends for years but have never been to each other’s houses. O_O

5. They are stuck up

I don’t like meeting new people from Nigeria, especially the ladies. You will have to prove yourself to be worthy of their time and I don’t think any human being deserves that sort of treatment. It is just a front. Don’t take it to heart.

6. They can be very unprofessional

The level of unprofessionalism I have seen while working with Nigerians especially the men is unbelievable. Dating your colleagues or students is unacceptable, but most of them don’t think it is a big deal. I wish I had a dollar for every Nigerian colleague of mine that I had to caution about his conduct, I would be living in a mansion by now.

7. They love to gossip

Gossip makes the word go round in Nigeria. I think they think it is normal way of life for some of them. Some housewives will sit at home all day all night gossiping about everything from their neighbours to their children. Nothing is ever off limits. That’s why a lot of them get into trouble for spreading vicious rumours. What makes this even more disgusting is that men do this too. Eww.

8. They take advantage of people

We are known for taking advantage of people who are too nice or stupid. You should always make sure you know what you are about around Nigerians or they would refer to you as a ‘maga’ which means a foolish person. There is a saying that goes ‘shine your eyes’ which means be smart! So shine your eyes my people and don’t let anyone use you as a maga.

But no matter what, I am still Nigerian to the core and love Nigeria with all its flaws. Naija for life!!!!!
