Making Mindfulness Meaningful

You've probably heard about mindfulness, but what the heck is it exactly? If you've been wondering this, check out the tips below, and come to the next Tuesday @ 7 Workshop, "Making Mindfulness Meaningful." University of Illinois Counseling Center Paraprofessionals will walk you through what is meant by mindfulness and walk you through some exercises that can help you better manage stress, focus, and be present. Join us on September 13 at 7 p.m. in Illini Union Room 406!

2. Try working on your breathing.

Even though you don’t realize it, when you get tense, anxious, or riled up, our breathing becomes shallow. Taking in slow, deep breaths a few times will signal your body to calm down.

3. Meditate

Mindfulness meditation can lower stress levels and change the brain in a productive way. Try listening to mindfulness meditation videos on YouTube to practice dismissing distracting thoughts.

9. Get present.

While practicing mindfulness, one of the most important things to do is be present in the moment and to attend to the different things that might pull your attention elsewhere.

10. Smile!

Mindfulness is supposed to be something that helps you stay focused and attend to the things you need the most. It’s one of the most versatile skills in your arsenal and once you got it down there’s nothing that can stop you now!
