    1. "Copenhagen"

At first glance, the Netflix tagline "William unexpectedly befriends a 14 year old who changes how he sees women" causes one to look away with a sense of discomfort. However, you should look past the basic plot-line and give the film a chance, as it has more depth to it than a forbidden relationship.

The story is not a love story in the traditional sense, but rather a story of friendship no matter how brief. A late 20-something guy attempts to find himself in Copenhagen and is led on a journey of self-discovery by a 14-year-old girl who is wise beyond her years.

    2. "We Are What We Are"

Are you a horror buff?  If so, this film is a little gem with a different take on the genre.

In a dreary little town people often go missing, and this family has a secret; they are cannibals and live a cult-like life led by a strict father.

The film has a dark beauty and slowly builds up tension which explodes in the final scene. The movie inches forward slowly until the final scene rewards the audience with plenty of blood and gore.

    3. "Electrick Children"

    A mix-tape causes a miracle pregnancy.

A young, 15-year-old girl believes a forbidden song she listened to impregnated her. Her parents want her to marry and her older brother, Will, is thrown out because he is believed to be the father.

The young girl runs away, along with her brother who stows away. The naive teenagers meet "real life" teenagers who are just as lost and naive as the Mormon siblings are sheltered from reality.

This is a unique film about growing up and coming to understand oneself while finding answers to life's questions.

    4. "Snowpiercer"

"Snowpiercer" is a South Korean film that takes place after the world has ended. Everyone left alive is on a train, divided by class into sections which determine each character's worth. The film boasts an international cast with recognizable stars, Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton and Octavia Spencer.

The main plot is that a group at the back of a train hopes to take over and gain a life that is worth living. As the tagline says, they must, "Fight [their] way to the front."

The film shows the main characters fighting their way to the front and facing interesting obstacles in each train car. With assassins, children singing, sushi and blocks of bugs, each train car holds both the unique and unknown.

The plot of "Snowpierecer" is hard to explain, but it is worth a watch and, to be honest, it should have been as big of a blockbuster film in the United States as it was internationally.

    5. "What Maisie Knew"

The film follows a couple's custody battle as seen through the eyes of their precious 6-year-old girl.

The young girl is parented not by her actual parents, but by the younger partners of her parents. The awareness of her parents' fight and the overall absence of parental figures is shown on screen beautifully by the filmmakers in their focus on the young girl.

A film about a divided family may not seem interesting or fun to watch, but the portrayal of the little girl is unique and reveals the strength of the little girl to persevere despite the ways in which her own parents are more childlike than she is.

    6. "Breathe In"

"Breathe In" is, on the surface, a film about a forbidden relationship between an exchange student and her music teacher, who is the father of the family she is staying with. The student and teacher have an instant connection with music, a connection which his family dynamic lacks.

The girl, played by Felicity Jones, has an understanding of life and people, which makes her seem older and allows her to relate with her music teacher. The film is truly about a family's loss of connection and understanding of each other, which is brought to the surface by the arrival of an exchange student.

    7. "How I Live Now"

"How I Live Now" is based off of the book of the same name by Meg Rosoff. The film takes place in the beginning of World War III.

A teenage American girl named Daisy is sent to live with her aunt in England, but instead finds only her young cousins. They are forced to live without parental figures, and eventually are taken away by military forces to separate camps for men and woman. The cousins promise to make it back home, and the film depicts Daisy's struggle to make it back with her younger cousin to their home.

The film is great, partly because of Saoirse Ronan's skill as an actress and her ability to lead the film. It is also a unique depiction of a war, in which the actual battles of war aren't shown, but rather other realities of war.

    8. "Jane Eyre"

Based on the famous novel of the same name, this film is a beautiful adaptation of the classic story which heightens the Gothic setting with spectacular camera lighting and filming techniques.

Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska perfectly capture the essence of their characters and successfully depict a relationship filled with tension and mystery. Jane is a governess to Mr. Rochester's young charge and falls in love with him, but he has secrets and a mystery that dwells within the house.

The film is by far one of the best film adaptations of a classic novel within the last decade.

A playboy man's life is interrupted by the arrival of a baby girl at his doorstep. Now an instant father, the man learns how to be a father and gets a job as a stunt-man in Hollywood to provide for her.

The film is a comedy which shows the love between a father and daughter. An issue arrives when the mother shows up and wants custody of her daughter, but the father has his own reasons for refusal.

The movie switches from comedy to melodrama suddenly near the film's end, but successfully creates a cute film which admires the love between fathers and daughters.

    10. "Perfect Sisters"

"Perfect Sisters" is based on a true story in which two teenage twin sisters kill their mother.

The film follows the sisters through their miserable lives with an absent, drunken mother and her multiple abusive boyfriends. The sisters eventually have had enough and jokingly start to plot about killing their mom. At one point, after one sister is constantly goaded suggestively by her mother's boyfriend, the two sisters have had enough.

The plot to kill their mom turns into reality and the film then shows the fall out of her death. The film is scary to watch because the filmmakers weirdly make the viewer sympathetic to the teenage girls, despite their crime.

The two actresses, Georgie Henley and Abigail Breslin, make the movie worth watching with their strong and believable dynamic as sisters.
