The banking industry has suffered a lot over the years, and now, come 2013, they finally had to pay the price; literally.

Boy, it sure has been one heck of a year, for banks anyway. In 2013, U.S. and European banks had to fork over more than $43 billion in fines-- a record amount for the financial industry.

Now, looking at that figure you're probably thinking:

And you're absolutely right.

Don't get me wrong, I fully understand that the banks had certain obligations, between penalties and settlements, that they had to fulfill from previous years, but still. $43 billion sure could go a long way..

Here are six things that are roughly equivalent to the record-breaking fines:

1.) A year's worth of work in 2012 from Lebanon

Yes, that's right, you could flat out buy Oracle's CEO with that figure. Sidenote: It's almost quite eerie that this dude is actually worth $41 billion.

5.) Yahoo!

With a market cap of about $42 billion, we could purchase the Web giant out in Sunnyvale, California, and just live the dream. Or, you know, until we have enough to buy Google.

United Way, one of the U.S.'s largest charities, pulled in the most in 2013 when it came to donations-- $3.92 billion. At that rate, $43 billion could match that amount for the next 11 years. Or, you know, distribute it to other organizations.
