    America's Trash, South Africa's Treasure.

An underrated musical genius gets an unexpected second chance.

In the early 70's a Detroit native Sixto Rodriguez, or as he's simply known as "Rodriguez", recorded two of the most well written, albums of that time. I think i may go as far as saying, two of the most well written albums of ALL time. Cold Fact (1970) and Coming From Reality (1971) both address major issues involving politics, religion, and poverty. Listening to these albums will quite frankly, shift your thought process. Rodriguez' lyrics and unique voice will provoke new thoughts on the way you view the world, and you'll find yourself questioning things you may have never questioned before. Its incredible how relevant these albums still are today. But sadly, America, and the 70's just were not ready for Rodriguez.

After the albums went almost completely unoticed in America, Rodriguez went back to his day job. For over 20 years Rodriguez lived his life as a hard working man. Little did he know that while he demolished homes and remodeled them, he was becoming bigger than Elvis, and The Rolling Stones in South Africa.

At the time Rodriguez' music made its way to South Africa, they were at the height of their Anti-Apartheid movement. South Africa was extrememly conservative at that time and his music turned their world upside down. South Africans gained a new perspective and sense of independence through his music. Cold Fact (1970) and Coming From Reality (1971) were so controversial that they were banned by the government. Although Rodriguez' music was highly praised, very little was known about him, and eventually he was thought to be dead.

In 2012, award winning director Malik Bendjelloul released Searching For Sugarman, A documentary about Rodriguez' failure in America, his unknown fame in South Africa, and the journey that a few of his fans made to find out how he died. Since being released Searching For Sugarman has won numerous awards, and has shed a new light on Rodriguez and his music both in America and around the world.

Second chances like this dont come around very often, or even at all. At 70 years old Sixto Rodriguez is getting the love and recognition he deserves, but most importantly his music is being heard.

His story is incredibly unbelievable. Please make time to watch this film. If you have already, watch it again.
