Where's My Father's Day Playlist

He was the family rock, the bread winner, the kaki-shorted, human jungle gym when there was no park around…and that was all well and great for his kids. However, as you rolled by this scene, shotgun to your old man’s Malboro hanging out the window, trying escape the effects secondhand smoke during your weekend visitation, you realized that not all of us have the Hallmark experience that every Sears commercial portrays. So, this Father’s Day, I calling for some diversification. I think it important that we shine a light on the many faces of fatherhood, and what better way to do that than through song. Here is a playlist for your Father’s Day. Hopefully you can relate.

The No Show

A complete deadbeat, this one was. You may have seen him once or twice and the only time he really comes up is when your mama is mad, and swears you're just like him.

The 6-10

He held down a job, wasn't a total no show, and was generally there when you needed him (give or take a few recitals and award ceremonies), but he wasn't about to be tied down, either, and the kids from his other two families generally agree (but you won't meet them until later).

The Step-Daddy

When the other two wouldn't step up, this one did...but you still couldn't stand him. "You ain't my daddy" was your go to when he tried to discipline you. It wasn't until later that you really understood and appreciated all that he did.

The Creeper

No need in celebrating this guy, call the authorities instead and play this at his arraignment.

The Good Guy

Not that everyone of the others were "bad," but this guy was exceptional. He may not have been perfect, but just him being around has had a lasting influence. Call him up and play this for him right now.

This goes out to the guy that you hope to be. Maybe you didn't have the best role model for this in the world, but are determined not to let negative patterns repeat and to carry forward whatever love/life lessons you gain from the presence, or lack of, from on of these guys above. You'll do great.
