When you’re a DJ first starting out or still in the early stages of playing out, it’s difficult to know how to take things to the next level – you know you’ve got the talent and you know you’ve got all the best tunes, but sometimes you don’t know how to get your name out there or bag the kind of slot where people can hear what you can do, especially when there are so many DJs around these days. Of course you can just sit around waiting for a lucky break or some great opportunity to fall into your lap, but really you need to be making moves yourself. It’s easier said than done though – using social media is one thing, but it’s obvious and every other DJ is trying to use that too, so how are you going to stand out from the crowd and get that exposure you’re looking for? You know clubbers and ravers would love your sound if only they could get to hear it. Well that’s where the International Turntable Challenge comes in. You might have already heard a bit about this DJ competition, but I only just saw it for the first time. Tipstr.TV, an online London and Berlin TV channel, have teamed up with Mixcloud.com to try and find the hottest new club DJ out there. They’re not fussy about genre and the sets I’ve seen on the show so far are really good – there’s nothing amateur hour about this. To me this looks like the kind of exposure that most DJs could only dream of, and the winner gets their set featured on Mixcloud, which means they’re going to be getting their name put alongside the likes of Diplo and Ben Klock – not something to be sniffed at. This isn’t all just for DJs though. For listeners like you and me, we’re always looking for the next thing. Sure, we’ve all got our favourites DJs to go to when we’re looking for a new mix, but nothing beats that excitement of finding something fresh or discovering new, raw talent, and that’s what a DJ competition like this is good for. As I say, sometimes it can be so hard for the young guns out there to get their break, and, if they don’t, how are they ever going to change up the game? If they can’t we’re just going to get left with the same old same old. So the International Turntable Challenge is your chance to get ahead and find out the biggest DJs of tomorrow before they’ve got their face plastered all over the cover of Mixmag. Maybe as a result you’ll get a chance to catch them in small, dark basement club somewhere before they’re playing to thousands at a festival or stadium. You can look back and say, “I was there.” Even if you can’t, you can still check the DJs out on Tipstr.TV. I know I will be.

Featuring the best of up and coming indie music stars of 2013 If finding cool new music is hard, finding an album of cool new music is surely impossible. Not so. Cohesive TV will be releasing a free downloadable album of music to coincide with every episode of Sound Visions. Each album will take you through the best in upcoming music, and will arm you with all of the contemporary music knowledge you could possibly need. The first twelve track album has a perfect mix of all genres, so there is something for everyone. me fatale badass of Zeitgeist Zero’s “When The Lights Go Down”. By no means the only naughty girls on the album, Zeitgeist Zero are joined by The Kut and Argonaut. The Kut fuse Nirvana-angst with Jessica Rabbit sexiness and undoubtedly leave behind a trail of broken hearts wherever they go. Argonaut not only give you a tortured rock sound, with a haunting female vocal, but also leave you with a pretty intense fashion crush. For the indie-pop rock fans, The Winter Tradition’s “San Diego” is going to be a new favourite. A classic pop rock banger, it is no wonder they are receiving more and more attention on the scene. For a slightly New-Romantic spin on the indie rock model, try “Close to the Edge” by Canvas Wall. Slightly darker, but still totally catchy as a pop song. Similarly, Eric Unseen’s “Missing” is dangerously catchy. Oozing energetic fun, it is definitely one of the sunnier and faster paced tracks on this album, you will be toe tapping along within seconds. The summer is captured completely Little Devils’ “Last Orders”, who slam their stamp of achingly fun ska onto this album- it is a veritable challenge not to dance! Another band dying to make you dance is The Jab. Their track “Stranger” belies their relatively new status- they perform with a polish and style that many bands would kill for. When you’ve had enough dancing, Sound Visions has the come down sorted. Jahming’s 100mg is an effortlessly cool track, and Jahming’s chilled-out vibe practically drips off this incredible reggae number. Similarly, “Beautiful Soul” by Odoghan is a solid and brilliant guitar/vocal combination, and done so well that it is nothing short of heart meltingly gorgeous. And finally, if you really want to lose your heart on this album, lose it to The Seven Deadly Sins’ “Yesterday”. Their expertly executed blend of pop melodies and heart broken lyrics is fantastically done, and will guarantee that these Scottish sweethearts will be on your gig wishlist. Sound Visions brings you sounds from around the world, and now you can own them on this series of free downloadable albums. Sound Visions is a speedy lesson in what’s hot. The fusion of genres is perfectly done, and means there is something for everyone. Definitely the gateway album series of the year! Now showing on TipstR.TV and free to download as album
