They Nibble

It was a sad police report about an elderly woman who was found "in full decomposition" in her home. The little dog was found next to its empty bowl on the kitchen floor.

Morbid curiosity - a hallmark of the trade, really - bade me ask the shift commander: Why didn't it eat the body? It is, after all, meat.

Oh, dogs will NEVER eat their owners, he said. In fact, they'll protect them and growl at you when you approach.

But cats. Pause. Oh, they'll nibble.

I'm pretty sure I squealed his head off over the phone.

Pudding Microwaved

She was 15, babysitting 2-year-old Jodie when she heard YOWLING. No idea what was going on, followed the smell of singed fur. A step stool and and two and a half minutes later, she was cleaning up Pudding, the poor kitten the toddler had decided to microwave to keep her “warm.”
