    What It's Like To Grow Up With Vietnamese Parents In Australia

    Forever lost in translation, but you wouldn't have it any other way.

    1. You got awesome home cooked meals.

    2. ...and Cold Rolls

    3. Rice was the staple. In fact there probably hasn't been a single day in your life you'd gone without it.

    4. 'Banh Mi', aka Vietnamese Dog Rolls were the norm.

    5. Saturdays meant Vietnamese school and extra Math and Science classes. Starting from when you've just escaped toddler-hood.

    6. This was the grading system for 'normal' school AND Saturday school.

    7. If you were unwell, Tiger Balm was usually the cure.

    8. Your parents got their pop-culture fix with Paris By Night.

    9. or even modern Vietnamese folk opera, known as cai luong.

    (A somewhat polarising form of entertainment, God help you if one parent loved watching and the other didn't).

    10. Your parents never let you sleep over anybody's house, and school camps made them uncomfortable.

    11. There was a local Vietnamese community where your parents shopped for delicacies not found in Woolies or Coles.

    14. Your dad was trendy in his own way.

    15. And your mum rarely gave out hugs, and when she did, it was usually a pat on the back.
