These Artsy Japanese Bento Lunch Boxes Will Blow Your Mind

The Japanese are renowned for their amazingly arranged lunch boxes in all sorts of cute designs of popular characters, people and animals. Known as kyaraben or charaben, which means 'character bento box', these lunches are a long labor of love.

These lunch boxes are known as Bento boxes and a traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and vegetables.

The decorated bento was originally made to engage children with their food and to encourage a wide range of eating habits.

The most common side is cooked egg, including omelette strips or squares cooked typically with salt and sugar called tamagoyaki. Boiled, scrambled and fried eggs are also common.

Kyaraben accessories are used to create the designs. These include picks, moulds and stencil sets.

Other popular food items are grilled fish, fried meat, fish cake, and vegetables that are boiled, pickled, or steamed.

Fruit such as apples, tangerines and kiwi are often added as part of dessert.

Bento boxes are used in Japan to convey love from the maker to the eater.
