At midnight (eastern) on April 13, Taylor Swift's social media abruptly changed.
Her Instagram bio and profile picture updated...
A countdown was posted on her Instagram story...
Her Twitter header, profile picture, bio, AND website changed...
Her website also posted the same countdown...
Electronic billboards with the countdown have also begun popping up in major cities around the globe, as reported on Twitter...
What does this mean?
Taylor Swift recently discussed in an interview with Elle magazine how she enjoys using countdown apps and adding things she's looking forward to when she's going through dark times.
Coincidentally (or, knowing Taylor Swift, NOT coincidentally), this is her "lessons twenty-six" in the interview. The number 13 is Swift's favorite number (she used to write it on her hand during every concert performance), and the 26th is 13 days after April 13th. Swift has used social media to promote new albums and album cycles before, memorably deleting all of her social media posts before the release of Reputation in November 2017.
Reputation was also the last album Swift under her 12-year contract with Big Machine Records, as she signed a new deal with Universal Music Group in November 2018, and her future albums will be promoted under Republic Records, an imprint of Universal Music Group.
If this countdown does represent new music, it will be the first time Swift has released a major album outside of Autumn (1989 released in October 2014, Red released in October 2012, Speak now released in October 2010, Fearless released in November 2008, and her self-titled debut album released in October 2006).
What else could this be?
Swift was also cast as Bombalurina in the movie adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cats, which was expected to wrap filming in March 2018 and release in December 2019. It's possible that Swift's social media changes and countdown clock are due to a promotional cycle for the Cats movie.
