21 Countries That Have Still Never Won Eurovision

Always the bridesmaid, never the Conchita. But do they stand a chance this year?

    1. Portugal

Eurovision has not been kind to Portugal. Its debut entry in 1964 came in dead last, and it has made the Top 10 only seven times (out of 47). But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and the Portuguese don't look like they're going to give up any time soon. Part of their problem is the fact that even their most charming entries, like 2009's "Todas as ruas do amor", are growers rather than showstoppers.

Is 2017 their year? This jazzy (term used loosely) number from Salvador Sobral has its fair share of fans and has qualified to the final... this could be a surprise contender.

    2. Malta

If you could give any country an A+ for effort, it would be Malta. The microscopic Mediterranean island takes Eurovision seriously, but despite two show-stopping performances from Chiara in 1998 and 2005, it's always close but no cigar.

Is 2017 their year? We thought Malta had a good chance last year with the incredible Ira Losco, but sadly not. And this year is no different, because Claudi Faniello didn't even make it to the finals.

    3. Cyprus

The birthplace of Aphrodite™ always seems to be overshadowed by its bigger sister, Greece (and is famous for always awarding them the maximum 12 points). But they've sent over killer tunes themselves, including 2007's criminally underrated "Comme çi Comme ça" by Evridiki, and 2012's "La La Love" by Ivi Adamou.

Is 2017 their year? Gravel-voiced Hovig delivers a powerful vocal over an infectious beat (written by the same guy who wrote Sweden's 2012 winning entry). This could be Top 5 for sure... so long as Hovig survives the dance routine, which involves aerobics and THREE trust falls.

    4. Iceland

    Participating since: 1986

    Highest position yet: 2nd

Floating about in the northern Atlantic, it's easy to forget that Iceland is in Europe. But Iceland has given us Björk! And pickled fish! And volcanic flight disruption! The closest its ever gotten to a Eurovision victory was as runner-up in the 1999 contest.

Is 2017 their year? Nope. Svala's Paper is this year's official 'Eurovision Track Most Likely To Be Unironically Played On The Radio' entry, but it didn't make it past the semi-finals.

    5. Croatia

    Highest position yet: 4th

Croatia probably made its biggest splash in 1999, when Doris Dragović performed a song about Mary Magdalene in Jerusalem, although Severina's ode to high heels ("Afrika paprika!", oh dear) in Athens is also hard to forget.

Is 2017 their year? Where to begin?! Jacques Houdek performs a duet with himself, going from spoken word to Mariah-like vocalizing before launching into opera. Watch this go Top 5, especially now that Croatia is the only Balkan nation in the finals.

    6. Slovenia

    Participating since: 1993

    Highest position yet: 7th

Slovenia has had middling success in recent years, and its most memorable entry is still 2001's "Energy"... but for all the wrong reasons. Oh, who can forget such lyrics as: "Electric runs right through me! I'm in ecstasyyyyyyyyyy!"

Is 2017 their year? Nope. Omar Naber didn't make it to the finals this year.

    7. Hungary

    Participating since: 1994

    Highest position yet: 4th

Poor Hungary has yet to surpass the success of its debut, although it came close with "Running", which came 5th. Though often overlooked, it's produced many high quality entries, including 2011's Dion-esque "What About My Dreams?" and 2013's chillax "Kedvesem".

Is 2017 their year? 2017 is severely lacking in "ethno-ballads", a typically successful Eurovision sub-genre. Romani-Hungarian singer Joci Pápai certainly delivers on that front, with the final 30 seconds upping the tempo and firmly drilling the hook into your brain. A winner, maybe not, bit this could go Top 5.

    8. Lithuania

Lithuania is the only member of the 'Baltic Trinity' to have never won. You might say that's because they once sent a song titled "We Are The Winners"... but that's actually their only Top 10 entry so far.

    Is 2017 their year? No.

    9. Poland

Since being the runners up in their debut year of 1994, Poland has made the Top 10 exactly... once. Their most memorable entry? 2014's "My Słowianie - We Are Slavic". No, that really was its title.

Is 2017 their year? Despite a surprise qualification to the finals, Kasia's power ballad has too many stops and starts to rise above the rest this year.

    10. Romania

    youtube.com

    Participating since: 1994

    Highest position yet: 3rd

Romania hasn't missed the final since the semi-finals were introduced in 2004 (apart from last year, that is, when their entry was disqualified). Like hosts Ukraine, Romanian entries almost always delivers a good show, whether that means opera dubstep, flaming piano battles, or moonwalking with bagpipes.

Is 2017 their year? Our bet is that their bonkers ode to yodeling (there will also be canons) pulls a Poland 2016 and lands in the Top 5.

    11. F.Y.R. Macedonia

    Highest position: 12th

The Top 10 has always been out of reach for *big breath* The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. It's hard to say that's undeserved, though, given the middling quality of their entries...

Is 2017 their year? Jana Burčeska was a big favorite among Eurovision fans when the bouncy (and surprisingly poignant) Dance Alone first dropped. Alas, not even a marriage proposal televised live could get her into the finals...

    12. Albania

    Participating since: 2004

    Highest position yet: 5th

Albania's debut, "The Image of You", was an adorable little ditty. But perhaps the success of the operatic, Gaga-esque "Suus" in 2012 indicates they need to start going a little out there in order to stand out. Virtually all of their entries involve a woman standing still and emoting passionately at a camera. Switch it up!

Is 2017 their year? Lindita's team threw everything and the kitchen sink at this power ballad, but it didn't make it to the finals.

    13. Belarus

    Highest position yet: 6th

Belarus doesn't have the strongest track record when it comes to the quality of their Eurovision contenders, although that doesn't seem to bother voters. The adequate but forgettable "Work Your Magic" came 6th in 2007, and the abominable "Cheesecake" somehow made it through to the finals. But really, Belarus is best known for always awarding 12 points to Russia (but not this year!).

Is 2017 their year? NAVIBAND's entry has a chant-friendly hook and is undeniably cute (and is also the first Belarussian entry ever to be performed in Belarussian).

    14. Bulgaria

Poli Genova delivered her country's best result so far last year with the undeniable catchy If Love Was A Crime. It was only the second time in 10 years that they even qualified to the final, although Sofi Marinova's Love Unlimited (performed in TEN LANGUAGES) certainly deserved to.

Is 2017 their year? Kristian Kostov has an enormous fan base and is performing second from last at the finals. Not to mention, Beautiful Mess works astoundingly well on a live stage. This could be a huge upset for those who think Italy has it in the bag.

    15. Moldova

    Participating since: 2005

    Highest position yet: 6th

Moldova's only been participating for a few years. But who cares about the mileage? Their ska-pop debut was a highlight of the show, as was their 2007 rock ballad and this fierceness in 2013. Moldova's only problem is its tendency to send a sub par pop duo every other year.

Is 2017 their year? SunStroke Project went meme-worthy with their 2010 entry, and Hey Mamma! is a lot more catchy than it has any right to be.

    16. Armenia

    youtube.com

    Participating since: 2006

    Highest position yet: 4th

What Armenia lacks in Eurovision history, it makes up for in... nationalistic entries. Their best so far remains Sirusho's poptastic "Qele Qele" in 2008, but can they ever match it?

Is 2017 their year? Armenia have thankfully ditched the identity politics and gone avant-garde this year. Artsvik's Fly With Me might be too cerebral for some, but this will likely go Top 10 at the very least.

    17. Czech Republic

    Highest position yet: 25th

The Czechs finally made the final in 2016 after four non-qualifiers in a row... but with a shocking zero public votes, they ended up coming second from last. Still, better than nothing, eh?

Is 2017 their year? Alas, the Czechs' bad run continues. They didn't make it past semi-final 1.

    18. Georgia

    View this video on YouTube

    youtube.com

    Participating since: 2007

    Highest position yet: 9th

Georgia hasn't really produced any classics during its short tenure as a Eurovision contestant. Still, they get marks for effort. Their debut, "Visionary Dream" (the modesty!) was certainly pretty out there as far as pop songs go!

Is 2017 their year? Nope. Tamara's would-be Bond classic Keep The Faith didn't make it past the semi-finals.

    19. Montenegro

    youtube.com

    Participating since: 2007

    Highest position yet: 13th

Oh dear, this is awkward. Since splitting from Serbia, Montenegro have only reached the finals once, and scored the result you see above. To be fair, "Euro Neuro" was actually quite funny. And hey, at least they technically won once... as part of Yugoslavia.

Is 2017 their year? Despite opening lines like "Linen is covered with feathers / Wet dreams, wild nightmares, I surrender" and a pony tail that could be categorized as a weapon, Slavko didn't make it past semi-final 1.

    20. San Marino

    View this video on YouTube

    youtube.com

    Participating since: 2008

    Highest position yet: 24th

San Marino is so small, organizers have deemed its population statistically insignificant. That means its votes are 100% decided by a jury (compared to the 50/50 public-jury split elsewhere). Its most popular entrant (and possibly only permanent resident) is Valentina Monetta, who made history in 2014 by finally getting San Marino into the finals on her third try.

Is 2017 their year? Nope, sadly Valentina (yes, she came back, this time with American crooner Jimmie Wilson) did not make it past the semi-finals.

    21. Australia

    View this video on YouTube

    youtube.com

    Participating since: 2015

    Highest position yet: 2nd

For a country that isn't even anywhere close to Europe, Australia has done fabulously during its short tenure as a Eurovision country, coming 5th in its debut year and winning the jury vote in 2016 with Dami Im's incredible Sound of Silence.

Is 2017 their year? Eurovision voters love a good ballad, and 17-year old Isaiah will probably go Top 3 on vocal ability alone. It might be a tad too similar to Dami's entry, but that's certainly not a bad thing!

Note: This list only includes countries participating in the 2017 contest. Past participants that have never won are Andorra, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Morocco, and Slovakia.
