So few nights ago, Nigerian blogger Linda Ikeji and some of her non-fans nearly broke Nigerian internet when she posted a photo of her newly acquired Birkin that a number of people pointed out as being counterfeit. Ouch. Of course she didn’t agree, declaring that she’s too rich to buy a fugazi. Nevertheless, the Hermes Birkin has been a status symbol for thirty years, and these are a few things you should know about it.
It is named after Jane Birkin, an British actress. On a flight from Paris to London, she was seated next to Hermes Chairman, Jean-Louis Dumas and her straw bag fell out. The two had a conversation on what the ideal leather bag should be and Hermes created the Birkin bag in 1984.
Each bag is completely handmade by Hermes expert craftsmen.
An average bag is created in 48 hours.
It is priced between $10,000 and $150,000.
It is made only from the finest exotic material such as crocodile skin, calf, lizard and ostrich leather.
The most expensive Birkin was a red Porosus crocodile skin with 18 carat white gold and diamond hardware sold at a Dallas auction for $203,150.
Jane Birkin receives a royalty from Hermes for the use of her name which she donates to charity
Victoria Beckham is said to own at least 100 different types while Jane Birkin has only 5.
The waiting list is a myth that adds to the mystique of the brand: 70,000 units were made in 2014 alone.
Hermes is pronounced “Her-mehz”, not “Hermz”
