18 Things To Remember This Freshers' Week

Thames Valley Police wishing you a safe and happy Freshers' Week!

So, it's Freshers' week. And we're excited for you. A week of endless possibilities, new friendships and fun.

But it’s also a time of great change - you’ve moved, you’re in your new digs, and you have enough supernoodles to last you until Winter. But with new situations, there are new people, and new challenges to deal with.

So, because Thames Valley Police want you to have a seriously good time at Uni,

We've put together a few tips to help keep you safe.

    1. Always lock your doors and shut your windows in halls. Even if you are only popping around the corner!

    2. Think about the risks before letting someone inside your room.

    3. Never let anyone in your block without checking their ID!

    4. Remember if you see anything suspicious - or even downright annoying, you can report it to campus security. It might be nothing - but better to be safe than sorry.

When planning for all important night out…

    5. Think about how you’re getting home - before you go out. Check the last bus, take the number of a trusted taxi company with you…

    6. And remember to take a fully charged phone out with you!

    7. Keep an eye on your drink, and never let it out of your sight.

    8. That’s the same for your belongings!

    9. Remember to drink responsibly...

    10. And never leave a comrade behind.

    11. Consider installing a tracker app on your phone - it’s a great way of locating your phone should it be lost, stolen, or if a friend needs to find you.

    When you're going home…

    12. Remember to stick to busy streets when finding transport.

    13. If you’re using public transport and it’s quiet, try and stick near the driver.

    14. If you feel uneasy, don’t be afraid to move to another seat or carriage.

    15. Ask about the areas near your halls. Some shortcuts may seem great but may have a reputation for being unsafe.

    16. Never take an unlicensed minicab. They are unchecked, uninsured and can be very dangerous.

    17. Above all else, have a great time.
