If You Spotted This Eleven Plot Hole In "Stranger Things" Season 4, You're Not Alone

Some people (the writers) need to go back and watch Season 1 again.

🚨 Spoilers ahead for Stranger Things Season 4 🚨

If you watched the latest Stranger Things season, you know there are a lot of flashbacks to El's past, sometimes featuring some pretty impressive CGI showing Eleven as she looked when we first met her.

An overhead shot of Eleven in a flashback that has been digitally altered to make her look as young as she was in Season 1

But there's one major difference between the El in these flashbacks and El from Season 1.

Eleven from the actual Season 1

    She can talk now, apparently????

I don’t understand how these are El’s memories when my girl couldn’t speak any English in season 1 #StrangerThings

Back in Season 1, El could barely say anything other than "pretty," "bad," and "Papa."

Okay but in #StrangerThings season 1, El didn't know how to talk or use language at all, but in her season 4 flashbacks/memories, she and everyone else at the lab can speak perfect English? Am I missing something here?

For reference, here's a typical El line from Season 1, in response to a question about where she's from:

    El simply saying "Bad place"

And this is her talking in a Season 4 flashback:

El saying, "Helping me made Papa hurt you?"

Some people have proposed that El went nonverbal after the trauma of her confrontation with One.

stranger things spoilers (mild) apparently people are saying it's a plot hole that el can talk fairly well during her time in Hawkins lab & that she had to "learn to speak" when she escaped & to that I just say have you ever heard of going nonverbal after a traumatic experience

But that doesn't totally explain why El was unable to understand metaphors and words like "promise" in Season 1 when she and the other kids in the lab seemed to have pretty sophisticated vocabularies in Season 4.

stranger things spoilers - - - okay how did two + the other kids learn to talk like that? like the bullies using sarcasm and irony, but in s1 and 2, el spoke very literally and didn’t understand jokes or irony?? like they grew up the same way how did this happen

Other people have proposed that the memory loss that caused her to forget the deaths of the other children also made her forget all her language skills.

(stranger things spoiler) did people not watch the show😭😭 in the last ep it explains why el has forgotten her memories and how to speak

Guess we'll have to wait to see if we get an explanation. What do you think? Plot hole or intentional?
