10 Artists That Should Be Taught In Art School

I took more than 12 art history classes in both high school and college. For some reason, they never mentioned these great artists that I learned about on my own.

1. Angelica Kauffman

Angelica Kauffman was a talented neoclassical painter. It is a great pity that her work is rarely featured in a school setting. Her work is important because she is a woman Neoclassical painter.She specialized in doing royal and noble paintings. She also helped found the Royal Academy of London.

2. Frank Dicksee

Frank Dicksee was a Victorian Painter and Illustrator. He mostly made paintings based on Romanticism subjects. The painting above was based on a ballad written by John Keats. It was about a fairy woman who killed knights.

3. Edmund Blair Leighton

Leighton is one of my favorite painters for two reasons. The first and most important reason are the dresses. He puts a lot of painstaking detail into the dresses of all his characters. Just look at the beautiful dress of this maiden! The second reason is the subject matter. His medieval paintings are always interesting they are not your typical medieval time paintings. They focus more on the mundane aspects of the time.

4. Franz Xaver Winterhalter

As you may have noticed, I have a weakness for beautiful dresses. This painter did wonders for illustrating the beautiful dresses worn by all the queens of Europe. Practically, all the royal queens had a portrait made by this artist. Even in Russia, this painter was coveted.

5. Henry Nelson

Nelson has a few paintings that are noteworthy. Still, it would be nice if he was mentioned even a little. There comes a time when one gets bored of Michelangelo and Raphael. Anyhow, Nelson's most noteworthy works featured the final hours of Mozart and Raphael.

6. Frederic Soulacroix

Soulacroix was one of the most successful artists of his time. His genre paintings were coveted by private consumers from Germany, the US, South America and Canada. Even today, his paintings still sell well and for good reason. Just look at the elegant leisure subject matter. It is simply a joy to look at this painting.

7. Ivan Kramskoy

Kramskoy does not have a lot of interesting paintings. Still, the few that he does have make up for the rest. This one features one of the many bizarre Slavic stories. These so called mermaids are all Women in White haunting the river shore.

8. James Tissot

James Tissot was one of the most prolific painters in all of art history. He produced hundreds of genre paintings and bible illustrations. Since his mother worked in a boutique, Tissot was in tune to the women's fashion of the time. As such, all his women were fashionably dressed ladies.

9. Joseph Caraud

Caraud is so unknown that he does not even have a wikipedia page. He was a historical painter who was famous for depicting the life of Henry the 8th and other controversial monarchs.

10. Joseph Karl Stieler

This Bavarian painter was famous for his Galleries of Beauties. He did a series of portraits featuring pretty court ladies. He also painted the portrait of the infamous courtesan Lola Montez. He also painted Beethoven too.
