    Welcome To Butler

So now you're a Bulldog. Whether your'e from Indy or Alaska here is some advice from one dawg to another..

    1.

Take LOTS of pictures. There is nothing like your Freshman year. You'll want to remember every moment.

    2.

Make lots of friends and remember you don't have to like every aspect about them. No one is perfect.

    3.

You have to print out your basketball tickets an hour before the game. Otherwise pick someone who looks nice at the door, show them your ID, and hope they let you in.

    4.

Speaking of IDs, everyones looks god awful. But if it bothers you, tell the woman working the desk at BUPD that yours is lost and you want to take a new picture. I did mine on the first day of Welcome Week, she thought I was a hot mess and didn't charge me.

    5.

The least crowded/always working computer lab and printers are in the middle section of the Jordan Hall Basement. Do NOT trust Ross Hall's printer. I think it only ever worked twice when I lived there.

    6.

The only Apple Labs are in Fairbanks, Atherton lab, and Starbucks.

    7.

Rose Campbell, Carrie Rector, and Scott Bridge are very helpful communications professors.

    8.

Classes are small enough that professors notice when you are late or texting. They will make a note.

    9.

Go to professors office hours, writing, speaking, and math labs as well. They will make note and most likely boost your grade if you are on the fence.

    10.

Don't worry about one failed paper or quiz. Go to the teacher and express your concerns. If it is your first time, they will likely offer a redo.

    11.

Bring your computer and phone charger with you to class.

    12.

As soon as you get an email that advising appts. can be scheduled, do it. Convenient times fill up fast.

    13.

Wait 15 minutes for a late professors, 20 for a late doctor, then class is canceled. YAY!

    14.

If you have a car on campus, think before you tell people. You will become the go to person for rides.

    15.

If you don't have a car, rent the zip car for cheap. The bike share at the HRC is also coming back this year.

    16.

There is a hot tub and sauna in the HRC.

    17.

Running the canal loop is beautiful and about 4 miles. But please do not do it alone.

    18.

Get in a workout routine. It sucks if you don't. But remember, everyone's weight fluctuates. Especially in college. It's fine.

    19.

HRC hours, 6am-11pm weekdays. Different on weekends. Their workout classes are a lot of fun and have good results.

    20.

Atherton doesn't have the freshest fruit and Starbucks smoothies are disgusting. Cclub sells Naked Juice and the HRC makes really good smoothies.

    21.

There are ATMs and a Redbox in CClub.

    22.

Take food back to your dorm from Atherton, be discreet, but it's always nice to have an apple or two to eat late at night.

    23.

Embrace all dogs as well as squirrels. Black Beard is the leader of all squires.

    24.

Go to at least some of the Welcome Week events. They are actually fun and you can always go out after.

    25.

All of Butler's "Raves" (the parties the university puts on) have free food. Eat and leave.

    26.

When it comes to fountain hopping, walk before you run. Start out with Star Fountain and then work your way up to the one in Irwin.

    27.

Don't pay for chasers. Fill up your water bottle with juice/pop in Atherton.

    28.

Have your phone fully charged before you go out. You never know where the night may lead you.

    29.

NEVER, and I mean never, go out alone. This goes for guys and girls.

    30.

You can use a hair tie to loop your keys to your wrist so that you can get into Ross and Schwitz. You will still need your ID though. Tape it to the back of your phone. Basically, when you go out, the less you have to carry, the less you lose.

    31.

No shame in calling dog ride when you are drunk, tired, or cold and you don't want to walk from one place to another. Everyone does it.

    32.

Go to ButlerPalozza even if you aren't a fan of who is performing. It is always a fun time.

    33.

If you want to rush, go to all rush lunches and dinners. You'll get a better meal than at Atherton.

    34.

Girls-Dress up (but don't over do it) for rush lunches and dinners. Cute/casual.

    Guys, just wear clothes.

    35.

Be early to homecoming "Yell Like Hell" in Hinkle. You will get free stuff (neon hats, fanny packs, etc.)

    36.

Don't be too stupid on Homecoming. Professors, advisors, parents, and excise (under cover cops) are all out and about. But don't let that stop you from having a good time.

    37.

Don't download Yik Yak, it hasn't been good since last October.

    38.

During formal recruitment, you are interviewing the houses just as much as they are interviewing you.

    39.

Have fun with rush. Don't worry about rumors and stereotypes. Go where you feel like you can be yourself. If you aren't your true self during rush, you wont find a house that allows you to truly be you.

    40.

Greek life, Rushing, belonging to a house isn't everything. It's nice, it's a bond, but not the end all be all.

    41.

Go and watch chariot races. It's a Greek Tradition.

    42.

All greek life gets up at like 4/5am on homecoming. It's called Christmas. I apologize in advance for how we act.

    43.

Cash checks in Jordan Hall on far right (Library side, walk up window).

    44.

If you get offered to go to a meeting or talk, go. There is most likely free pizza and/or insomnia involved. Why not get free food?

    45.

You can charge school supplies to your student account at the bookstore. But sadly not apparel.

    46.

Tampons and pads are kept for free in most campus bathrooms for emergency. (Except Ross) :(

    47.

Goodwill is by (across the street) from Glendale Target/Panera Bread. Go there for costumes. You can also try Vintage Vouge down the street, it is where all the good items get send like Christmas sweaters.

    48.

The IMA is a cool place and walking distance from Butler. It is free and has indoor and outdoor exhibits.

    49.

Sign up for Butler texts alerts from the bookstore AND BUPD.

    50.

Brita water stations are all around campus. Bring a re-usable bottle.

    51.

Please eat your meals. Even if your have to go alone! Butler is small enough that you will probably recognize someone there anyway.

    52.

ResCo has better quality, but less options. Atherton has more options, but less quality of the food itself.

    53.

Noodles and Company has bike delivery. Learning this was the best thing that happened Welcome Week.

    54.

The Fashion Mall or Castleton Square is better then going to Circle Center downtown.

    55.

    Parking downtown is cheap. ($1-5)

    56.

Go the extra few minutes to McDonalds and CVS in Broad Ripple. 38th street is not worth it. Creepy people and it is just not safe at night.

    57.

If you plan to grocery shop at Marsh, you MUST get a Marsh card. It is a ripoff if you buy something without one.

    58.

The closest movie theater is by the Gelndale Target.

    59.

Go to free Chick-Fil-A day and free breadstick day at Hot Box. You get a WHOLE bag!
